I just tried to install my new graphics card and my pc wouldn't even turn on with it in, it had a light on it though, so I put my old card back in and now I have no signal to monitor :/ I don't get it it was working 10 minutes ago, it turns on but I don't know whether it's booting up properly or not, I plugged my headphones in and the is no startup sound, my mother board is the gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3, my old graphics card is the evga GeForce GTX 750 Ti and my new one is ASUS GeForce GTX 970, power supply corsair cx600m, I have tried all the pci slots, and made sure all the wires an connected properly. I'm fairly new to all this and it's very frustrating given that it was working fine before I tried the new graphics card :(

Have you plugged in the additional power cables for it?

P.S did you turn off the power at the wall before you removed/installed it?

Really? How do I do that when I can't get any display, my motherboard has no video out put, I don't think. And it was working with the old graphics card 10 mins earlier :/

I'd go with PSU, perhaps the draw from the new GPU has killed a rail, or perhaps just highlighted a PSU fault that was on the edge before.

Have you got a multimeter?

Could that be the issue then? The pc turns on with the old graphics card (which doesn't need power from the power supply) but no display, i don't have a multimeter but I might be able to borrow one

If you get no display with either GPU, it sounds very much as though the fault is elsewhere. The PSU is still working to some degree as the PC turns on.

These things can be a nightmare to fix without other systems to try bits and peices in.

Can you for example borrow friends PC and try the new GPU in that ?
Can you try your PSU in another system ?

Good luck !

Are you getting any POST beeps at all? It's quite possible that you've dislodged something else in the process so double check absolutely all connectors (including fan connectors on the mobo) are in correctly. I've seen a loose SATA connection stop a PC from even POSTing before.

Otherwise it's a matter of unplugging things until it POSTs (unplug USB devices, remove individual sticks of RAM, unplug drives....)

I have a multimeter he can borrow, but someone would have to tell him how to use it as I haven't got a clue. I can also test his old cards in my pc if he needs and maybe lend him a psu or gtx280 just to see if that's the problem.

The only thing I could think of was updating the bios as I have read on a few forums of issues with the gtx970 and certain motherboards, but that doesn't explain why the old card has stopped working. So I think a problem with the psu could be it, but the 970 isnt super power hungry and that psu should have coped so not sure what might have caused it.

have you got another spare cable from psu to your graphics card, I had a cable with a fauly plug at one end which caused problems, when you unplugged your old gpu it might have started it then

Something else worth mentioning is he bought a silverstone 8 pin pci express lead as one didnt come with the psu, but looking at the pics of the modular socket on the psu and the lead they dont seem to match..

The back of his psu grabbed from a review site. It doesn't look like it should fit to me, just wondering if that's why the new card wouldn't work as maybe it wasn't getting the extra power?

OK, so he's bought a Silverstone modular PCI-E cable and stuck it into a CX600M?

That could be the problem right there. Although the plug may fit, the PSUs internal connections on the circuit board may not be the same as the OEMs are different.

I think that testing his cards in your PC could be a good idea, in order to rule out if they're dead or not.

It's a bit odd that the CX600M didn't come with an 8-pin PCI-E cable - this review by KitGuru shows a chart of what cables it comes with. It definitely comes with 2x 6+2 pin PCI-E cables:

Yes it did come with some of those cables but I can't find them anywhere, I may have thrown them out(yes I am an idiot) I plugged the 6 pin side in to the psu as the it wouldn't go in any other other way

When you say you plugged in the 6-pin part, was it a 6-pin or 6+2 with the 2-pin part left free? If that is the case, you've plugged it in back-to-front. Sometimes on these cables even the connections between the plugs are different e.g. pin 1 at the GPU end could relate to pin 5 back at the PSU...

As I said above, Silverstone and Corasir use different OEMs and connectors, so the cable likely isn't compatible.

I'd suggest getting the cards tested in another PC if possible to make sure they're OK. Was the 750Ti one that requires no additional connectors? If that's the case, then the PSU could be damaged, or worst-case scenario is that by using an incompatible cable you've damaged the motherboard.

As you don't have onboard, I assume you're using either an X58, X79 or X99 motherboard?
