Hi All,

I'm just having a think about future cars and am trying to working out what might be a good bet if you want something that has a big engine, say V6 or V8, is reliable, looks good and can be had for around the £5k mark. I've had a look at the American stuff that springs to mind immediately but it seems to be quite old for the money. I remembered that the MG ZT got a yank V8 but these seem to fetch ridiculous money when you think what the 4-pot and v6 variants go for.

I'm also wondering that if these American cars are simple, reliable and cheap to service, whether LPG is a good idea on them or not?

Another BMW vote. To be honest they are the only manufacturer that can build a big engine that is sensibly economical enough to use on a day to day basis unless you have mega bucks for fuel.

In my heart I love the Alfa V6, but that is just a personal passion.

A reliable £5k car and you suggest an E39 M5

Think its probably best to go sub M/S series really - he has made no mention of requiring blistering performance and even implies he'd be happy with a V6. I'd imagine he'd happily trade 0-60 in 4.8 seconds for sensible ownership costs.

Lexus GS?

a big engine is great but if i were specifically towing with it id want to make sure that from the factory they had a decent sized clutch so that it can actually transmit that powwer

The S-Type R is 'simple, reliable and cheap to service' is it?

What about a 760iL? You can get those for £5k now too :p

OK, maybe not. Seems pretty reliable though. I suppose it depends on your opinion of what "cheap and simple" means. Having come from E65s etc, it's pretty simple and cheap in comparison.

How would people rate a VW/Audio/Skoda of some description with the VR6 "V6" in? The bit of searching I've done in the past suggests they are pretty reliable and decent engines

I like the sound of the Monaro and had completely discounted it as I assumed they'd still be too expensive. Not fussed about blistering performance as such just like the thought of a good value roaring v8 that isn't a money pit. People tend to steer away from such cars for mpg alone don't they?

What about the log side of things? The return would come quite quickly even on average mileage with something that only does 15-20mpg wouldn't it?

meh... I'll say it... BMW 330ci, straight 6, enough power, luxury, doesn't cost the world when it goes wrong(says he who spent £2700 buying it and £1500 fixing it)
