So ive been using a 7990 for about a month now the card has been very good and been playing a lot of games with it with good results, tonight i turned on the pc and a big spark shot out of the card and some smoke completely scared the crap out of me 1st time anything like that has happened, i have taken the card out of the system and using onboard graphics and the pc is working completely fine without it

this happen to anyone else or anyone no why this would happen ?

:) cheers guys :)

Nasty. Where did you get it from? Must be second hand?

It's probably beyond feasible repair tbh although don't rule it out.

I'd imagine it got a knock at some stage and something shorted out when this happened but I'm far from a pro on these situations. It's very unusual for a card to actually spark and smoke like that.

Sounds like a short, has the card been properly cleaned recently? It might not have destroyed the card but I wouldn't use it in a overly expensive pc without further investigation.

I had a GeForce 7900GS that did this. That was 5-6 years ago. This year the old GeForce 9800GT I replaced it with quietly died.

It does sound like a short, especially given that it sparked.

Other then a spark put the back is there anything actually wrong with it? It might be worth dropping an email over to the cards oem maker and see what they say.

My 7990 had the same issue in september, but was still under warranty and Asus refunded the price, not sure what caused it just saw a spark on the card.

In the OP's case though he also had smoke come out of the card. I agree it's worth contacting the manufacturer to see if there's anything they can do.

If its smoking then its liquid evaporation/short, that's a cap that has blown on the card.

It could possibly be fixed but card maybe dead. :(

Check for bulging capacitors.

EDIT:
Just looked at the card, not many on the card so I would take the heat sink off and check the silver and blue caps.

Or as others have said it could be a short and its dead. :(
