hi,

sorry for the caps but i am having a slight panic attack here.

please do not have a go at me for not having backups at the moment, i know its stupid and i should have done but i didnt, so theres no point having a go. productive advice is what is needed.

basically

installed SBS 2011 on my server, started to connect my computer to it, when it said 'if you want to be able to access your files after please select from the drop down list below' now for some reason i didnt select it because i thought that would mean it would link my documents to the server account.

so anyway finished installing, rebooted, when it booted back up logged in to my original user, most of my icons had gone and my background was changed to the default. **** so i went to my computer and saw that the harddrive had 300gb more free space than usual, double **** (!@"*&"+!"£*

so i immediately shut down, so that nothing was written to the disk, and booted into my 2nd OS that is on a different partition. which is where im writing this from now.

what would be the best course of action here now? the file that i need was located under C:\Users\Alastair\Documents\Caterham School\Music\Tech Piece Write Up

I NEED THIS FILE BY FRIDAY! It is over 3000 words and has taken ages to write..

please dont ask why i dont have backups atm theres no point that will get me nowhere and i do normally have backups but i was reinstalling SBS so i didnt today.

any ideas?

cheers

Feel your pain! :(

Not wanting to be a "mwehh backupz!!!" nazi, just a tip for future reference, get Dropbox, save everything in there, never look back. 2gb limit on the free version though, but perfect for any docs.

Use Recuva but run it from a different disk to the one you're trying to recover data from as installing the program may overwite some of you data.

You also need to recover any data to a different disk for the same reason.

thanks, well currently i am running 'recover my files v4' and so far its picked up EVERYTHING except my coursework :@

i hope i have a copy at school :S

When I've recovered friends disks for them I have always had success with Testdisk. Though if you want to recover the coursework I would suggest Easeus Data Recovery Wizard software. This is free if for recoveries upto 1GB and very easy & powerful.

1) you say logged in, you mean to the workstation you had jsut joined to the domain?

2) the files you wanted were stored in your user profile in my docuemtns?

2003/xp would have created a new profile folder called <username>.<domain> and left the original folder <username> in the documents and settings folder

what folders are in the Documents and setrtings folder???

Take a screenshot of C:\Users\ for us (or just list all the folders in there)

Likelyhood is the files are still there and you don't need a recovery program for them.

You may find some folders in there (ones with your name in) say 'Access Denied' if you try to open them. Not to worry, just take ownership of the folder and you'll be in.

-Try this before running testdisk etc or anything destructive

basically when you join a computer to and SBS network it basically overwrites the current user data with the stuff on the server.

im at school at the moment so cant take a screenshot, but they have been deleted because i logged onto the same user as usual (Alastair) and i had nothing of mine there, and when i went to the local disk it had another 300GB free than usual.

Under users there are no new folders and the folder that had them before as i said has been overwritten

Thanks to everyone who signed up using the link above, didn't expect to get 3! Got myself a nice extra 750mb now. :P

right am currently running recuva deep scan on the volume, which has an eta of 2 days :S

so i will leav that running,

i would have got drop box but my max upload speed is around about 10kb/s so the amount of time it would take to upload stuff would be stupid :L

oh and i had a copy of the coursework at school PHHEEEWWW so im not completely screwed but i still need everything else back! :L

anyways will report back with what recuva picks up

cheers guys
