big problem please help

when i try installing windows onto my laptop, it randomly turns off when i try to format or install.

ive turned the option off in bios to stop you overwriting something or other

i took the hdd out and put another one in, formatted that, then as soon as i tried installing xp the laptop shut down.

ive managed to pop linux on fine, but windows wont go on.

used the same windows disc on the pc and that works perfectly.

i cant see how it would be a heat issue as the laptop works fine in ubuntu (but gets hot) however if i cold boot then try installing windows it still powers off.

its like my lappy has a windows only hardware no-install "lock" (and it doesnt)

Does it give you any error messages?

Sounds more like a hardware fault TBH.

My first thoughts would be over heating, but if it installs Linux thats not so likely.

I had a problem a few months back with one dodgey stick of memory wouldnt let me install windows.

Another thing you could try would be going to the bios and disable all the onboard peripherals ie sound, network, parellel port etc to see if its some sort of hardware conflict. If windows installs then try enabling the hardware one by one.
