I have a HP Envy laptop and i was doing some coursework on it and i was using word 2010 i think it was starter one or something, now last week i had saved work and it was fine but today i saved the assignment that has to be handed in today and i saved it in documents and now anytime i click on the folder it closes straight away, even if i bypass it by going to the download folder first that will close straight away so i cant open up the normal folder on my pc so i didn't think nothing of it so i opened word and saved it to my desktop as i saved it my desktop just keeps refreshing i cant click nothing or open nothing as it refreshes every 3 seconds, Here is a video to show the problem, if anyone can help that would be amazing

Have you tried booting into safe mode? Another option if you have a spare PC is hook up the HDD to that and see if you can copy it off there.

Can't view the video at work but in W8 or W10 you can get into safe mode by holding shift while you click restart, it will give you a menu with troubleshooting and choose reboot options.

have you tried accessing it via a browser?

Just type in c: into the URL bar, it'll at least let you access it that way as a temp solution.

n/mind, video just loaded, seen you can't open anything.

I cant click start then reboot

Power off the whole thing. Then while it's booting up hold the power button to force it off. That should trigger Windows recovery when booting up next time which will give you an option to boot into safe mode.

It isn't refreshing, what is happening is that windows explorer is constantly crashing (or being force closed) and restarting, and since it started when the file in question was saved to the desktop (and considering what happens when you try to access documents with that file located there) so there must be something in the file that is wrongly being run and causing the issues seen (this is just a guess).

I would suggest trying to run a linux live CD/DVD/USB to either retrieve the file or at least erase the copy on the desktop so that it might stop the desktop madness (and if it doesn't, then you might have to do a repair on the OS).

+1 Spot on. Or as someone else has previous mentioned try to use the HDD that's in that laptop in another PC with a HDD caddy to remove that file.
