Hi, this is going to go on a bit this problem but i hope i can explain it well enough to understad and i hope someone can help as i was stuck for a while with it and cant work out what was wrong.
The first part of the problem isn't what i am asking about but i will mention anyway, my system started becomeing extremly slow and i lost my internet connection and couldn't get it back, i could not get a ip address or my modem to assign one via dhcp. anyway blueyonder couldnt help either they said it sounds like a majoy os failure in some way so i decided to format and start again, which is where my bigger problems started because i didn't make / install this pc and i have limited knowledge of sata and raid..
After formating and deleting the striping array which was setup as raid 0 i thought i wouldn't have a problem re'setting it up, i went into F10 on the raid screen to set both hard drives up again which went fine but when i put the winodws xp diwc in the drive and went into setup it kept telling but there are 0 drives on my computer and i couln;t press c to make a new partition as it had nothing to create a partition on. i then noticed in windows setup it mentioned press F6 to load raid drivers so before i formated i had seen this and only had access to the drive via a boot cd which gae access to a dos like program and i copied the files out of the driver part of my asus disc over on to a floppy and tried this disk in the windows setup and it found the raid controller but still when i got into windows setup after that it still listed no drives.
i phoned a techy who said that in the bios on the first page the drives should be listed on the sata 1 and 2 master part which they were not it just said none, so after that i decided to disable the nvraid and the silicon sata controller in the bios and after i restarted and went back in the bios the drives were then listed. so i then tried to put nv raid back on and again the drives were not lists and i tried windows setup and also again setup could not find a drive to install on.
So i have thought bugger it i will just install windows without raid or the sata controller being on and up to not things seem ok but i would like the system to be setup the same way again plus for what ever reason after this has set up my main drive is now G and the 2nd hard drive is H with the cd roms being c and d and then a usb drive being e.
Can anyone advice me at all, with being in windows properly not i have created a peoper pata and sata driver disk which had exe files on which the disk i created in dos didnt.
I just cant understand why i cant get the drives to list any more with nvraid being turned on or is that normal i was only going by what the techy told me.
Also one other thing in the raid setup i noticed a data transfer level or something simular which was set to 64k there was other options like 32 and 16 and 128 being the highest, it said for most people 64 is right which mine was but 128 is for high performance, if i was to try again could i use 128? am not sure if i can because wouldn't it have been setup like that anyway but if the options there and i can use it, it would be silly not to set it to 128??
anyway i hope somone can help me and that i have explained this as best as possible.
