specs: Q9550 @4ghz
4GB DDR2 corsair Dominator 1066 ram undercloked to 952 mhz
asus p5q Deluxe
nvidia 295
850 watt coolermaster PSU

hia got a big problem. ive had my system at the current clocks for a good while now and during the last couple of days ive been getting weird system lock ups/stutters during videos like youtube, HDD stored TV/movies etc and gaming.

ive tested dropping CPU speed down to 3.5 and have ram at auto to see if it was down to this paticular OC but i still get sever lockup/stuttering.

let me clarify what i mean by stutters/lock ups. for example, when im playing bad company 2 it will run fine for a few mins, then all of a sudden teh game will freeze and stutter at 1 frame every 15 seconds or so, every now and then the display will go black as if the VGA connection has been removed and will display "analogue", "digital" in top left corner of monitor which usually indicates display connection issues. the image reappers eventually and then im back to desktop, but it will still be virtually unresponsive and continue to flash. i have no choice but to restat computer either by a hard reset, or a long wait for windows to shut down for me via a brief press of the power button. doesnt really seem like a common hardware failur as i havent seen a BSOD yet and as windows will shut down itself.

ive had this issue before a few months back and was resolved via a MB bios update. tried that approach this time but no success.

i think it may be a ram issue but as stated above it is underclocked and when system is at defaullt clocks it runs fine. ram at default is 1066 MHZ so that causes a lot of confusion.

have tried ram in differnt slots and on there own, all be it a brief go on there own. i will try that agagin to see if its a single stick of ram but seeing as though when sticks are at 1066 they run fine as oppossed to 952

Vcore is 1.31 (1.30 after Vdrop)
men voltage is 2.1 as required

any ideas. thanks

If you think its the memory try running memtest to check everything is fine.

You could try a strip build test, try it with the basics in (cpu, memory, hard disk) test and then gradually add the rest of the hardware until you find a failing component.

hia cheers for response. not a fan on memtest. i acatually have 3 sticks of ram and i know for a fact 1 is defective but memtest states no errors.

done a bit more testing seems the problem exisits only with 2 sticks installed as when i only have one stick in it runs fine, regardless which stick it is.

currently i have 3 sticks of ram in and cpu at stock while ram is OC 2 1111 mhz, no errors whatsoever. weird dont u think?

to be honest dude, sounds like your overclock is not a good one. sounds like your memory has suffered badly because of it. Restart your computer, hit F8, go into launch start up repair/repair your computer, hit memory diagnostics, restart and let windows do it magic to tell you if your ram is screwed or not.

Also, overclocking with 3 sticks of ram aint too good, you cant be running in triple channel because its ddr2. 2 or 4 sticks running in dual channel is the best way to do it dude xD

not sure if its a bad "OC" as its fine with 1 stick of ram. prime 95 is stable with 2 sticks of ram its just when a video or game is on that it will freeze up and stutter etc. will try Mem Diagnostic likw you mentioned though.

cheers

Just another after thought, but could this possibly be a failing hard drive? Just the video stutter your talking about thats making me think that.

Erm, could depend on your motherboard then. The board you have is a decent board, but not a great overclocker from some of the reviews I have read. If you are getting a bad lag/stuttering then it has to be your memory dude.

All I can think of. Either that or bad motherboard.

Hope this helps. Report back with results and run the memory test with only ONE STICK in at a time. Takes longer but runs each stick on their own nicely.

PGI947 has a point. Go to Start > Type "cmd" > Run it > Type in chkdsk /f > hit Y to run on next start up > restart > dont hit anything, let windows do its magically wisdom > and it will recover bad sectors and fix. Done.

Maybe do the same with chkdsk /r. Same thing but looks for other errors.

i have 2 500 gb seagate HDD's in a raid 0 config and for about a month now one of them reports under status "error occurred". this is in raid screen b4 windows loads. bit weird that if it wer the hdd that it would cause problems when cpu is OC and cause no problems when there is no OC.

ran mem diagnostic no errors reported there. even with the faulty ram installed.....

A bad drive sector can cause all sorts of strange problems, I would follow CinderzFTW's advise and at least run chkdsk, at least that way its something else you can rule out of the problem...

wont let me run it. states recent softwatre install is conflciting or something like that. then says to use system restore to restore to prior point b4 installation of software....

Bad software installation then. Try it in safe mode. Restart > F8 > Safe Mode and redo the stuff I told you to do above!

Also try system restore in Safe Mode. I always do system restore in safe mode encase of malware or a software confliction screws around with it in normal mode.

If this don't work, I do not know dude!

i have reinstalled windows 7, re configured raid 0 config, error message has gone. ran chkdsk no errors.

max OC i can get up to with twosticks of ram is 3.6 with either of the sticks installed on there own i can go way beyond 3.6.

any one have a theory as to why suddenly my 4ghz OC is unatainable with 2 sticks but successful with one?

well that processor is a good processor. You can get 4ghz, but you will have to push more volts through it to get that result. More volts you push through = more heat and more chance of the cpu being unstable. Just keep it at 3.6. dude... stable on that and you will be happy.

Leave 4ghz plus to sandy bridge!

tested again with each stick on its own and the problem still exists.

you dont understand, ive had it at 4 ghz for well over a year now. now all of sudden i cant get past 3.6 without it stuttering badly and cause the display to be lost also display driver fails to respond windows aero theme get disable then re-enabled etc. very frustrationg.

solved it. was my soundcard. moved it into a PCI-Express x16 lane as oppossed the samll PCI-Express 1 lane. weird how the sound card doesnt cause problems at <3.6 ghz but anything > than it, it plays up.
