Today my system started playing up, slowing up and freezing.
I decided to format and reinstall vista as it's been six months since
first problem was errors when loading files off vista disk. Got passed that then when installed and booted for the first time I get the disk checking tool up with errors all over the place. Now I bootup set my boot device priority in bios to my cd drive to try and reinstall, bootup and I'm now getting bootmgr is missling press alt con and delete hmmmm
this is a loop
is my HD goosed?
Sorry about grmar I'm on my iPhone
any ideas pls

In the vista setup I can get it to complete but when it restarts I'm getting windows is starting for first time then bsod and reboot

If my instalation disk is scratched and during installation I'm getting messages that say can't read from source, but continues to install, could that be causing my bsod

As stated get a copy of memtest ... you can burn it to a bootable iso so it won't need a working OS on the system to run (and is a lot better thab the windows memory diagnostic tool).

I have the same sort of errors you are describing before a few times and it's either been a disk on its way out or failing memory.

You could also get hold of the diagnostic tool for you make of harddisk and see if that picks up any errors.

Ultimate Boot CD has a lot of disk diagnostic tools on one bootable CD (and probably has memtest too).

Thanks for help
I'm begoning to think it's either the HD or instalation disk is damaged
now getting after failed install
windows failed to start \windows\system32\winload.Exe
status 0xc0000221

sounds like a HD problem seeing as your posting here you have access to the net
Go to your harddrive manufacturers website and down there diagnostic tool for there HD
Your want a DOS Boot CD or if you have one still a floopy that way you dont need windows and you can check to see if it is worth messing around with it anymore.

If you have a Western Digital Hard Drive go here

Update
got hold of samsung Diogenes tool
now boots into Diog software and says
can't open cd driver cd001
your ram drive is loaded at c out of memory error
I'm then at c:\>

any ideas

I had a similar issue when I built my first rig - Windows just wouldn't install properly - tried different install disks and different drives - still no dice.

In the end it was the RAM - one stick was bad so the memtest recommendation is sound advice - alternatively, you could try installing with just one stick of RAM in and see if that works.

I'm just running memtest86 now
39% no errors so far
so if memtrst comes thru clear I can definatly rule out memory?
Where do I start then

ooh 713 errors and counting
so looks like this is the prob
will it tell me which slot or slots are bad

No, i dont think it will tell you which slot, if it tells you the problems on the 1st or second ram or what ever. For Eg. corsair 2gb corsair 2gb, if its the second one, it will be you second memory stick to the first memory slot. Eg. 2gb free 2gb free. it will be the second slot. Im really poor at explaining things but im sure you will get what you mean. Btw, when you rma memory, you have to send it as you got it so it means all of the memory. Not just the faulty stick.
