My system.

Althlon 64 3700+
1gig ram
MSI K8N Diamond motherboard
Western Digital 320g hdd sata
maxtor ide 120gig hard drive

I'll set the scene. There I was in XP just about to shut down for the night when i noticed in Core Control that my FSB was only running at 166 mhz. The default is 200 and I haven't been overclocking at all). I decided I go into the BIOS and check things out. In there it seemed to be set correctly. So I exited without saving settings and was then told that the boot disc was invalid. The only thing I could do was run windows XP installation by booting off the cd. I selected the installation partition and formatted it. Wasn't too bothered about formatting as the is my backup drive and I only wento through a backup routine a couple of days ago. The first part of the installation seemed to go ok. The partition was formatted and files coppied. Then it came to restart. It went through the post, then restarted. It just sat there constantly restarting.

Anyone had or heard of anything like this before? I don't know weather the motherboard is at fault (hence the wierd readings to start with) or the hard drive had failed. But then surely I wouldn't format and copy files over without giving an error.

Any ideas?

Well here's an update. I restarted XP installation. This time I totally deleted and recreated the main partition. After that I left is to do a full format. So far everything has gone to plan. XP has installed and now it's time for bed. I'm still at a loss to explain the wrongly reports FSB speed or loss of hard drive functionality. I haven't installed anything in XP yet. Will report back with an update tomorrow.

The RAM has been working fine for 18 months in this machine. Don't see why it would suddenly pack up now. Windows is now installed and I now have the fun of service packs, drivers etc.
