Big Screen Beyond 2

Will be interested to see how good it is, especially with the new facial interface.

Well, I'll be testing the **** out of it all, like an autistic savant, for the 14 day window and then decide if I'm keeping it or not.

I really hope I like it though, it's almost exactly what I want for now specs and form factor wise. The only thing I'm a bit concerned about in advance is the binocular overlap and the reported 'glare'. Oh, and the brightness. Hang on, that's quite a lot :)

If it's no good I think my only real other route is the Dream Air, but I'll leave that for a while I think until/ if stock is ever available, and it's actually ready and finished! It still looks like an Alpha product at the moment.

I'm still waiting for the Halo kit! i love the headset though :D

Have you tried proper super sampling on it yet? Would be interested to hear your thoughts. Stevey Flight Sim seems to think it makes a genuinely significant difference.....

(And can people stop doing the open mouth whore pose slack jaw surprised look on their Youtube thumbnails please. It's very annoying)

Ive read elsewhere too the BSB2 looks great when supersampled, tbh even my modest resolution wise Q3 looks great supersampled to 4K. And yeh those slack jaw thumbnails, hmm, lol! Well done Chris on surpassing 1000 subs, watched your 5 things vid the other day, very informative.

Quest Pro looks great supersampled too. I'm seeing a pattern here...

It's the only way to run a Rift CV1.

Hey just noticed you're doing really well not just on number of subs but regularly getting number of views into 4 figures and above, well done! Afaik for a fairly new channel thats good going (i can see your channel has been around for a while, i mean not posting regularly for very long).

Yeah, I only really started the channel after I got made redundant in November. The older videos were just random uploads from ages ago, I wasn’t even thinking about starting a proper YouTube channel. I just needed something to keep myself busy.

But people seem to like the content, and I’m nearly monetised now, so I’ll definitely keep it going.

So yeah, I’m pretty chuffed with how it’s going! Honestly, I’ve no idea why it’s doing so well though.

Be warned, they're slapping a 20% restocking fee on returns according to some over on reddit.

Well within their rights too. Stops people taking the p or they can pay for the right to do so.
But they're not well within their rights, they're allegedly (and I'm going off second hand info here so could be absolutely wrong) charging the 20% restocking fee due to the unit being a custom built item which it isn't, the gasket is and they are allowed to charge a restocking fee for that but not the entire order.

Oh interesting. I am 80% sure they can also do so for ‘diminished value’, used it beyond just inspecting, there is a hygiene issue once someone has slapped it on their face so wouldn’t surprise me if that factors in too.
That however was UK law I think, not sure where this company is.

I’d always just recommend using a credit card for purchases like this for that extra protection.

Doesn't matter where the company is, if they sell to the UK they have to abide by UK laws. Though getting companies to actually do that is another matter entirely.

I think it was more interesting to me as to how many people seem to be returning it for this to be a problem and the lengths people are having to go through as well.
I didn’t need any more red flags, but that’s as good one as any to completely avoid them

I can see both sides tbh, businesses, especially smaller one's, may struggle to offset the costs of allowing free no reason needed returns for their product.

Tbh I've got no problem with a reasonable restocking fee, no fee is preferable ofc from a consumer perspective. I have occasionally cringed when i've read about some return reasons, not often tbf, but its when reading things like "i couldn't get it comfy" and it then becomes apparent they just don't know to adjust a hmd, or saying it was blurry then later reading their eyesight is defective, or saying the software is too janky when in some cases alls it takes is following some instructions. I'd even say theres a case for unrealistic expectations, possibly i.e. no one should really be expecting the large Pimax headsets to be the most comfy headsets, etc. I've never returned a headset for reasons other than faults (2 varjo aeros + quest 3 for dead pixels, 1 pimax 8kx for a failing cable). Tbh though i think i would have returned the PFD MR i had last year because of the comfort and lenses but at that time they only offered returns for faults, no faults with it, so yeh i guess i have just contradicted what I'm rambling on about.

No headset is perfect in terms of comfort. The Quest Pro was uncomfortable after about an hour until I got the Globular cluster kit with top strap.

The BSB2 is more problematic in that it's customized to the user's face, and the small form factor makes wearing glasses impossible, so I can see why people would return it, especially if it didn't live up to the hype.

The only headset I've ever got rid of was the PSVR2, as it was simply awful - terrible mura, not comfy, tiny sweet spot, and quite blurry. I even got it upgraded with a comfort kit, headpones, and prescription lenses but they didn't help, and so I sold it at a loss a while later.

Calm down everyone. There is no 20% 'restocking' fee. One thing I will say for Bigscreen is their customer service is absolutely stellar. Really First class which is so refreshing these days. I've been in touch with them a fair bit over the last week I've had this headset and I have it it writing that if I return it I get a full refund, but I have to pay for shipping costs, which I'm absolutely fine with. This is all outlined on their website and Ts and Cs for all to see anyway.

So customer service and company ethos I would so far give 10/10. But how do I find the actual BSB2e so far though? Errrr, it's sort of complicated but not really, and to cut a long story short I think I'm returning it. I think Bigscreen have basically prioritised making the 'smallest, lightest headset in the world' and have compromised too much on the obvious to achieve this 'USP'.

A bit more detail....

I've had to buy base stations and index controllers for it, so the cost has been considerable with that and ergo the total cost, on balance, it's just not good enough for me.

My main gripe? The glare. Oh my ******* Christ the glare!!!
I've only used aspheric and Fresnel lenses before and although I did a ton of research and knew pancake lenses + micro OLED had some glare 'issues' I wasn't prepared for this. At all. When I first put the headset on I immediately took it off to clean the lenses thinking they must be smudged and dirty. Alas no. Shocking is a word I would use without any accusation of hyperbole.

I genuinely, genuinely, prefer the Fresnel lenses on my PSVR2 and Reverb G2 I had to the lenses of the BSB2e due to the glare. And the aspheric glass lenses on my Crystal Light are so much better it's beyond words.

All this hype about pancake lenses has really thrown me, and my next VR headset path is now totally up in the air as a result as I wanted OLED and all OLED headsets are now pancake lens bound. And I am now genuinely convinced that the vast majority of the Youtube 'VR scene' posters are complete paid up shills and liars........I've only recently learnt that these reviewers with their "affiliate links in the description" get paid a few hundred dollah for every referral that goes through. That's why you see the same pattern of reviews/ repeated content and repeated opinions and comparisons that come out. I've watched the Youtube reviews especially for MSFS 2024 that say the Beyond 2 is waaaay better than the Pimax Crystal Light, and that is just 100% a categorical lie.

It's not just the lenses though. I'm even disappointed with the OLED panels on the BSB2e. I'm a full OLED snob for every device I own now and have been for years but the panels in the Beyond are incredibly lacklustre and it's not just the lack of brightness/ nits value. The colour gamut and in layman's terms 'punch' of the Crystal Light is vastly superior, which again has really surprised me as a die hard OLED fan.

Also, the clarity of the Crystal Light when both are at native res I would say is significantly better. I was hoping 35ppd vs 32ppd would be mitigated somewhat when the Beyond was super sampled a lot, and it almost does achieve parity in some games, but overall it's just not as good. I paid about half the cost for my Crystal Light (new from Amazon) Vs what I paid for the BSB2e plus base stations, controllers etc, and I think the Crystal Light is a much better headset overall even though I'm an OLED black levels snob.
Even the comfort, the supposed killshot win for the Bigscreen Beyond I've found lacking. The weight is obviously great, but the actual experience and how it feels on your face just is not, for me anyway.

I found one review that pretty much sums up my experience in many ways better than I can be bothered typing on here. Yes it's the guy who owns Somnium - and people will cry obvious bias - but as a normal man who is not a youtuber and just wants a ******* decent OLED VR headset, I agree with almost every single criticism the guy makes in this video....
