i think my motherboard might have a small scratch behind the CPU socket but i turned my pc on and my cooler failed. I didnt know this and after a few seconds i saw a big spark of light and a large snap sound from the top right of the CPU i think it was.

I used a different cooler and it came on with no problems.

(currently i cant get into windows so i cant test)

I am getting a new motherboard anyway soon but do you think this spark could have damaged my CPU?

there i can see no damage on the outside of it or the bottom or anything :S

thanks,

Is it posting? As in you get the BIOS slapsh screen / POST messages?

Or is it turning on, and just staying at full fan speeds etc?

Rite...should be able to.

But I meant is the system giving you any video output at all. Or is it just a blank screen

sounds like a capacitor popping, probly one of them near the CPU socket. If that scratch caused a short circuit (flash!) then there is a very good chance the cpu is toast. (they very fragile and dont like sudden surges of electricity)

Dang - yea the second time i booted i got a visual output on the screen - only got the pop once.

i really hope it was just the motherboard - it couldnt have been the capacitor - there are none on the back :(
