Just about to get a new E6600 and was wondering whether the existing Thermaltake Big Typhoon was adequate?

Seems to work a treat on my overclocked Opteron, but was wondering would it do the job on my C2D?

And anyone know if it'll fit on an EVGA 680i board?

Cheers!

Yes it will be adequate, there are better coolers but the typhoon was once the best up unitl about a year ago so I don't think you will have any problems. As for fitting to the EVGA, you may find that the H plate will come into contact with a resistor on the back of the motherboard(depending on what revision you have so using the neoprene pad is a must!

Don't see why not. My old Big Typhoon cooled my old Opty 165 better than a ninja i also had. When i upgraded to C2D the ninja was installed (was missing one of the washers that came with the kit for the typhoon so didn't install it) and its temps were ok up to 3.2ghz.

I see no reason why the typhoon wouldn't do very well with your C2D! ;)

Edit: I would imagine w3bbo's bang on with that fitting advice too!

Hopefully will be able to dig out the relevent bits for the fitting, otherwise it's looking like another few quid heading w3bbo's way... :)

And if it cools like a hot kettle, I can always splash out again!

munge,

On the off chance, if you have a spare washer (the red ones) in your kit i'd love it as i'm one down on mine! :(

Don't have a clue where it's gone!

the big typhoon is better than the CNPS9500, I still think its one of the best coolers around. When i get mine which I bought from the MM I'll see if its any better than my Ninja :)

Will have a look tomorrow for you mate and let you know. In amongst the boxes and boxes of computer "crap"!

Mine runs my E6600 at 3.6ghz fine, so should be ok.
If anything, you can change the fan for a more powerful one if need be.

Actually they are almost the same, with the Zalman in the lead.

Exactly! Because unlike the Ninja with its widely spaced (fewer) fins the typhoons densely packed fins really benefit from the added airflow of a higher cfm fan!

GT Junkie - bad news mate, don't seem to be able to find any of the bits for my Big Typhoon. And that includes the bits for fixing it to a S775 mobo, doh! So unless you need the whole fan, I can't help I'm afraid.

So basically, it's looking like a complete new CPU cooler, which is a bit of a pain in the bottom. Particularly as the stock Intel cooler runs under load at 65-70 degC :( :( It's even idling at 40+ degC at stock :( My old Opty 165 at 2.6 GHz ran at 30 degC or less at idle and only 50 degC at full load. Pretty sure it's not the case, cos that hasn't changed and using AS5 properly applied. God only knows why it's so bad! Either way, not even going to attempt to OC it until I get something better!

Toss up between the Amanda, Ninja Scythe, Big Typhoon or Noctua, will have to have a sleep on it... Unless Thermaltake can supply me the bits (or any one else out there for that matter ;))
