hi,

last night my epox mobo died a sudden and violent death - well before i planned to change my hardware.

however, after finding that socket 939 mobo's are hard to come by now (certainly i coulnd't find one with the right spec - there used to be loads), i decided to upgrade completely, so i am changing the psu, mobo, ram, and cpu. hard drives, case, dvd writers, monitor, floppy are all fine so they are staying.

anyway, the gear should arrive tomorrow so friday night will be spent buried in cables and hardware and mobo diagrams (trying to figure out the connectors). and i have that usual trepidation before a build - will it boot, or even post for that matter??? :p

the reason for this post is i want to see if anyone can see any flaws in this spec (apart from the gfx card which i know lags behind the new stuff but i'll change that later).

here's the spec:

Thermaltake Tsunami Black Case Inc Windowed Side Panel No PSU

Akasa Ultra Quiet 650W Power+ iQ Active PFC ATX2.01 PSU

Intel Core 2 Quadro Extreme Edition QX6700 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.66GHz (1066FSB)

EVGA nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)

BFG GeForce 7800 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-010-BG)

Western Digrtal Caviar SE16 500GB 5000KS SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (HD-075-WD

Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200rpm 8mb

SONY CD-RW CRX320E

Plextor PX-716SA 16x dual layer

Dell UltraSharp™ 2007WFP 20.1" Widescreen LCD Flat Panel Monitor. 300 cd/m² brightness, 800:1 contrast, 16ms response time.

Mitsumi OEM Black Internal Floppy Drive 1.44mb 3.5 Inchs

any probs with the above? what do you think?

You have picked a very nice computer there. It will run brilliantly once you have it set-up. One thing I might have changed though would be the ram. I think if I was spending the amount of money you have on the rest of it, I would have gone for some PC8000 DDR2 rather than PC6400 DDR2.
The ram you have picked will do the job perfectly but just to finish the system off, some faster ram would have been nice.

I hope you enjoy the computer :)

dammit,

i would have bought the faster ram if i'd known about it. this was a panic buy and i needed to order last night so the stuff would come tomorrow, so i can get the system back up and running again.

how much difference will there be between the ram i've bought and the quicker stuff.

and cheers for replies by the way

wish i'd thought of that. :)

tell you what, once i build the new rig i am going to take my epox mobo to someplace i can make a mess and put a hammer through it.

how dare it die. how dare it make the 2 days of un-backed up data i have on my docs hdd (yes i'll get it back once i build the new machine cos i keep windows on a different hdd) inaccessible to me.

i will kill that mobo cos it killled my system. an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

christ i only got it 14 months ago. plus it was meant to be great for overclocking but everytime i tried it would do nothing (maybe i'm just crap at it :D )

anyway, i enjoyed that rant but thats me done now.

lmao,

I know what its like to lose data! I killed my motherboard the other day by damaging the pins on the cpu socket (well, it deserved it).

I might join you with the hammer solution... sound pretty good!

well i haven't actually lost it. it's still on my hdd and i'll get it once i've built the new machine, but it is very annoying not being able to get to it.

at the moment i am without the last 2 days work (computer is used to run the business as well as play games) which is making things difficult.

Well like I said, the parts you have already bought are the best of the best. I just meant that seeing as you had all the best stuff, the faster ram would have gone better with it. The ram you bought though will do the job nicely and will still allow you to overclock anyway. No big problem :)

Have fun :)

:D :D :D :D

justfinished the build.

case is a nest. cables everywhere. how you people build such tidy rigs is beyond me.

but she posted!!!!!!!!!! oh god i love it.what a RELIEF. :D

installing windows now.

yeah i do. i have other threads relating to this upgrade that explain in more detail what its all about.

in a nutshell,

mobo died on wednesday at lunchtime.

use pc for business and need the last 2 days that were not backed up yet (but are on a seperate hard disk so they are safe).

desperately go to ocuk looking only for a socket 939 mobo but hardly anything there so decide stuff it i'm going intel (in style).

yes i game. love far cry. but the main thing i like is multitasking power, photshop power, video editing power, and far cry runs great on my gfx card as it is. it will run a lot better on this rig though.

once i feel like spending more cash then yes i will get an 8800

as i write this i am watching windows install on the desktop. seems to be going quick. must be my new cpu :p

Well I personally feel the 6700 is a waste of cash for the overall real-world performance it gives over a dual-core... in my opinion you'd have been better off buying an E6600 and a 8800GTX. Much better balance of muti-tasking/gaming. :)

oh well....

anyway, thanks to jake000 and kmistry ;)

you've no idea how glad i was when it booted up.

only thing is all my backups of my windows hdd are now useless, so i have to do a from scratch install of windows.

forgot how tedious it is setting up every single little thing.

once i get the business progs installed (sometime tomorrow) i am going to to do a bit of video encoding and see how it goes.

going by the time it is taking me to install software like photoshop (mega fast) i think vids are going to encode pretty quick.
