big upgrade

What is your actual budget?
First thoughts are if you can afford it, definately get 4 gig of RAM, Id also get better mobo, the 770 chipset, its a bit more but worth it

So that'd look like this:

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £78.99 (£68.69)
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard + Battlefield 2: Complete Edition Game £69.99 (£60.86)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7750+ Black Edition 2.70GHz (Socket AM2+) - Retail £49.99 (£43.47)
OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Dual Channel (OCZ2G10664GK) £37.98 (£33.03)

Alternatively this would be intel set up, which would prob be better bet still

OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Dual Channel (OCZ2G10664GK) £37.98 (£33.03)
Sub Total : £214.83

With either set uo if youre going to be clocking you'll want a reasonable aftermarket cooler too

What is your maximum budget?

Also, will you be needing any of: optical drive, hard disk, case, PSU, operating system or peripherals?

Finally, what do you plan to use the system for?

Thanks for your suggestions guys. My budget is about 250 tops. I already have optical drive, hard drive, os (xp) and decent coolermaster psu. I might have a look at other mobos. any other suggestions

+1 for 95trifles' e5200 spec. It is just under budget and a very capable chip for not much money - plus the 4850 is a beast for that price.

Ahh it's a good processor :)
I've just finished a build using the 7750BE edition and it's lovely. Gets thrashed by intel on super pi of course, but I'm happy to have chosen it over the e5200.

I'm also running a very nasty ecs motherboard with it. Saving money on motherboards is generally unwise, but it's running off a beautiful psu so will hopefully be fine.

Super pi is over rated TBH its a very biased benchmark. Motherboard troubles are always the worst so I always try to get something decent.
