Going to be buying a car next year and it will be my first one. Living in the UAE there are a lot of crazy drivers around in big landcruisers. My current choices are X5, Range Rover or 3 series. 3 series seems like a better choice since I can get a 2006/2007 model for the same price as a 2005/2004 Range Rover or X5. Is being in a 4x4 any safer? There is also the factor of it being my first car and how I would cope with parking in a cramped city.

What are your thoughts?

first car? have you got your license? why get such a expensive car if so?

edit never mind , u must be loaded just checked up UAE :p

well if you want safe , you cant get much safer then a range rover lol

plus to me the range rover is the nicest out of the lot you have mentioned, get a white range rover sport :D

Thumbs up for the Ranger Rover, I would spend the money very differently if you are spending as much as I think you are. But, in the context of where you live and what you are asking, I can't really fault the rr.

1. your more likely to be involved in an accident in a big 4x4 than a normal car

2. your safer when you do have an accident in a 4x4

I'm not sure they cancel each other out or not.

"UK insurance industry figures from Churchill show that urban 4x4s are involved in 25% more accidents than saloon cars and do far more damage.[2] Admiral Insurance also recently released figures showing that 4x4 drivers are 27% more likely to be at fault in the event of an accident.[3]

The RAC Foundation says, "You could blame some of the higher accident rate for 4x4s on size. Drivers who are new to these cars might not realise how wide they are. There is also psychology involved - if you feel more secure inside a big 4x4, you might drive with less care than you should."[2]

defo get a massiff 4x4. if there are 17 year olds in cl65s and cayennes, personally i think youd be safer on an oil tanker just off the coast of somalia.

:p

4x4 have higher centre of mavity - you can see more of the road ahead but don't be trying tight slaloms at high speed

I think there is a general rule that the more metal you have around you the safer you are. If you add seat belts, airbags, etc etc on top of this you are safer still.

Ranger Rover sports here are too expensive, I used to like them in the UK, but you see so many of them out here that they get a bit boring!

I have decided that the range rovers that I could afford would be too old, 5 years min, so I am instead going to get a 325i or 330i. Specced up 06 325i works out to be 14K,would have been around 11K if the pound wasn't so low, which seems pretty good.
