Having just read a load of posts over at the Stargate Worlds forums that contained yet more dissing of SoE over what 'they' (they were actually forced into making the change by Lucasarts IIRC) did to Starwars Galaxies I was wondering if there are many other big long running common misconceptions based on misinformation that continually gets regurgitated by the internet hordes?

There are many, so many in fact they have now become automated:

That I am in fact the 1,000,000th visitor to a website and that I'm entitled to a free Ipod Nano.

That there are greater than fifty, nineteen to twenty-four year olds in my area right now just waiting for my call.

That all emails typed by a Nigerian are scams.

That Diesels are a better alternative than Petrols

That ATI are better than nVidia

That AMD are better than Intel

The Consoles beat PCs for FPS gaming

That Fox is a man

Sorry, ill spread my definistion of the internet to beyond OcUK...

That Glass is a Solid

That Bill Gates said "Xkb of RAM is all you will ever need"

That a plane that is sat on a runway that will travel backwards at the same speed that the plane travels forwards will stand still under full acceleration and not take off.

That women exist on the intenet

Wow. That's some pent up aggro. You should work out.

Not having an MOT invalidates your insurance.

The conext is iffy. Having NEVER had an MOT could do, depending on the the nature of the claim. Technically an MOT is only valid on the day it's issued so the rest of the year you "dont have an MOT".
