What do you think is the biggest jump in gaming you have seen?

For me it would be Unreal in 3dfx. Sat amazed at the intro screen for about 5 minutes just watching the flyby :o

Half life in terms of newness like the intro, story and AI

Yep 3DFX on PC kick started the modern 3D graphics as it allowed Quake1 + 2 & Tomb Raider1 + 2 & Unreal1 to quickly establish the PC as a dominant gaming platform and demonstrate 3D was the future (technically 2.5D but whatever!) but since then the consoles have gradually taken the lead but PC as always was there first.

Console games are made using PCs so PC will ALWAYS be ahead. (unless a console if made that can program games, but then its not a console...)

im going to bed

Why is everyone saying Quake GL? Quake was and still is and amazing game, i remember trying the GL patch and it seemed to make it worse. Well, not worse, it looked more smooth and played much better but Quake to me was a dark and old type of game. Meant to be played in software mode, either 640x480 or 320x240. No need for open GL and 1024x768. Unreal was for that

Edit - Just like Doom, Im playing through Zdoom i think it is now (or Jdoom) in 320x240 mode, software everything with original sounds and non of the stupid new shadow, lighting and smoothing effects.

Quake - Making the transition from sprite-based worlds to a real-time 3D evironment.

Very true. I remember being amazed when i looked at a dead body and instead of it spinning around following me, it stayed in exact place all the time!

No game has even come close to the darkness and overall feel of quake. I loved the traps and level design

Is there any game with the same type of feel?

Id go as far as saying my favourite games of all time are quake and blood
