Just wondered if anyone would like to listen to something my younger brother has written.
It's his first proper foray into writing music as he has only done covers up until now.
So he's looking for a bit of neutral feedback that hasn't come from family members and friends

So comments welcome on the link.

Ahh, hadn't even noticed a specific music forum before. I guess it will be moved shortly.

No idea why it's quiet, perhaps he meant it to be soft.

I'll comment even though I am old & don't like that soft ****.
I showed him enough respect to listen to the full 5 minutes 18 seconds though & clicked on a few of his other links. The reason I clicked on a few other links was because I thought the dudes voice had potential to sing something ballsy & was hoping the othr links would give me a taste, They didn't, More soft poop :p
Tell him to drink 20 shovel loads of gravel a day for a year & go & buy a stack of orange or summit, turn everything up to 11 then repost
Well presented vid for noobs though with a fair sound, Knowing me everybody else will love it & they will be massive :p

It goes stereo when the bass kicks in around 2 mins 5 seconds.

I'm old, so take it for what it's worth.

Very garbled lyrics at the beginning and all the way through I hear " it's same song" etc with no attempt made at 'the'.

Quite a nice voice, but get some lessons.

Keep going though; this is meant as constructive criticism.

Cheers for that Malc, that's probably what he wants to hear anyway, he won't take offence to it I'm sure.
Parents have just bought him the new top of the range iMac, so I'm guessing it was produced on that, although he did say he paid for some studio time a week or so a go, not sure if that's what came from it or not..
I shall have to find out..

1/ a lot more could be made of the bass line
2/ it's a linear build up - quick build up>quiet section>full whack would sound better
3/ consider ivestigating string synthesis if you want that haunting quality he seems to be looking for

Overall not bad though, nice guitar riff, warm mellow vocals, nice piano accomnimant, keep up the good work

Why is it so quiet? I'm not getting up to turn up my volume even more.

That is because all your music is compressed to -0.1db peak and -6db (or more) RMS. It sounds **** and when played through a half decent hifi causes pain due to clipping when listened to at the same volume as this when turned up. This track makes me speakers sing as I can turn it up to 1/5 volume.

Sounds alright :)
Is it in stereo? First half was completely left headphone I'd say.

The bass is being played out of the right channel.

nokinidea,

Does he have anything else we can listen to? I'd also be interested in the track in FLAC if available?

It's good - nice tune and decent lyrics. One thing he really needs to work on though is diction. The words are a bit jumbled sometimes and his voice volume varies a lot according to the word sound.

He's trying too hard and over-using the hard pan.

Some decent effects (even if they briefly cross the soundstage) would liven it up, and it would make it a lot fuller.

Just asked him to sign up and post.
So he may well be along shortly with some info..
Apparently there is another new video he just put up but it must be processing or something as nothing is showing here yet.

I liked it.

However, it could do with being shorter, around 3 mins would be perfect. And also, it would be best if it was stereo all the way through, but he is very good and has potential.

Hi all.

Thanks for your words of wisdom!
All of that song was recorded on my new iMac in my room inside of an hour, still trying to figure out how to get it into stereo, does my bose speakers no justice!

To the gentleman who suggested I eat gravel, come to one of our gigs! lol i'll give you as much gravel as you want!

thanks one again for giving me a listen, some more stuff will be gracing youtube soon, Im trying to experiment a bit with my sounds, but there is only so much noise I can make in a terraced house!

I will be working in a studio next week so will have some better engineered stuff then.

till then

Peace

AJ

He has signed up but it appears he used a gmail account so I don't think he's going to get the activation mail. :(
I mailed Gilly about it but no reply yet.

He has read the thread though and promised to knock one up with more punch and gravel for you. :D

The one I mentioned earlier is up now but I don't personally like it.
The chords over power some of the lyrics, he gabbles the words out too fast in places, then switches from guitar riff to piano riff in an awkward place (although I did actually like the guitar bit) it just seems awkwardly placed in the song.
By far the worst sin though is it sounds too much like James Blunt :D

Suppose he has to learn how to use the software and the hardware so a bit of playing about is expected I guess

At least it's in Stereo now :p
