Bike insurance same as Car insurance?

Well I'm moving down to london in a month or so and so it means I have to sell my car. However, I really want to keep an insurance policy going to build up my NCB. The bloke at the insurance company has just put an idea in my head that I think I'm going to do, just need to make sure it'll work ok.

Basically I'm going to get about an £800 rebate on my insurance when I cancel it. When I asked if there was any way to keep the policy going he asked if I owned a bike, which I don't, but he said if I ran one I could transfer the policy over to that, and the policy would carry on as normal therefore building up my NCB. So I am thinking about bying a dirt cheap bike and insuring it for basic fire and theft with some of the rebate (don't need at this point as wasnt planning on getting it back as I only needed to sell my car as of yday). Obviously I would just leave the bike on my parents drive un touched and un-riden.

I figure that the rebate should cover the cost of a bike and the insurance and still get a decent amount back. How much does it cost to insure a small bike?

Would this count as a 'normal' NCB that could be used in the future?

Just to clarify a few points

• I will be selling my car but want to carry on some sort of insurance policy to build up NCB
• Have a full licence to insure it
• I doubt it will be more, I currently pay £1600 on my car
• Won’t need to renew the car or use it as I will be selling it
• The bike be kept in a garage

The idea to be able to build up a NCB that I will be able to transfer back to a car when I need one in a few years. Don’t want to be 25 and want to buy a fairly powerful car with NCB in the future.

Cheers for any help though.

Should be able to get a small 50c motorbike and insure it for £200 I would have thought, you dont need a license to insure it, just tell them you have a provisional but dont have your cbt yet, shouldnt be an issue.

Most insurance companies I have been with tho will not transfer car to bike or bike to car ncbs.
If they will take it up :D

This was the info I was looking for! I wouldn't be getting a CBR or anything, like above it will be a 50cc old thing!

That was the other thing, I don't have any sort of bike licence cbt etc (gave wrong info above), but it would seem a bit silly that you can't insure it to get one, after all you can insure a car before you have a full licence and how would you get the bike to the test center with no insurance.

I need to find out from Direct Line then whether they will transfer car-->bike and bike-->car NCB's.
