Hi guys,

I have been told that I need to replace my cassette and chain for my bike. As they are starting to wear due to me riding to work everyday

This the bike I have:

Been looking online and there's just way too many different types of cassettes and chains. How exactly am I meant to know which one I need for mine? According to the link above, my bike uses:

Cassette/Freewheel: Shimano 9-spd 11-32T
Chain: KMC Z99

But I cannot find those specific ones. Do they need to be specific ones or what? I really have no idea about this. And I don't want to end up paying through the nose for the parts.

Your advice and knowledge are greatly appreciated! :)

If you want to save a few quid you could get this chain. Think it's the one I'm using at the minute actually. Not much between chains of this price, think they're all made in the same factory. This has a split link though, which makes it much easier to install or remove if you need to.

If you want to save more money you can get all of the tools for a few quid on the bay, will work perfectly fine even if they don't last quite as long. Might be worth investing in a decent chain breaker though.

You shouldn't have to replace all these too often, if this is your first time doing it since getting the bike then the only reason the casette would be worn is if you let the chain get too bad first. In general, a chain should last a few thousand km (or about a year of regular commutes) and a cassette should last for about three or four chains. As long as you take care of them. You don't have to clean it religiously, but just try not to ride with a chain that's covered in grit all of the time, and top up the chain with lube probably around once a week.
