Evening Gents,

I've been pottering about on my R125 for about 6 months (and 4500 miles :p) now so I'm looking to do my direct access. I'm aware of what's required for module one and two but I'm not sure about the theory test.

Do I need to do it with a full car licence?
How does it differ from the car test?

The one "bikes only" section in the highway code is just half a page on helmets and pillion passengers. Surely it cant just be the car test with maybe one or two different questions?

Yes, even with a full car licence you need to do the theory test. When I did it, I borrowed the official DVD to practice and relearn anything I'd forgotten. I just kept doing the tests on that until I was consistently getting full marks.

There are a few more than two different questions! The DVLA have two practice theory tests online you can have a go at - here. Even just doing those two you'll get a good idea of the sort of questions that could come up. Questions about general roadcraft and road signs etc will be the same as in the car test.

also looking to get my licence this way :) have yet to apply for the provisional though.

looking at the tests thought it seems they are mostly the same as the car one, just a few specific bike Q's thrown in.. so still mostly common sense can guide you hehe :)

understand now you need to get 43/50 to pass unlike the 30/35 when i did my drivers licence hehe. not sure if hazard perception has changed... did some mock ones online and didn't score too great lol, but found a online one that reviews after and shows where the scoring brackets are... they either started scoring before the hazard was actually visible (wtf?!) or i had clicked too early... always worry that i dont want to click too much :p

guessing you are doing similar to what i have in mind for getting the licence. get CBT, ride a 125 round for a while and get confidence, take a lesson or two on a bigger bike then do direct access exam so you ca ride all bikes :D

quick question about the provisional... i already have my full uk drivers licence. had a look online and at the time i got it i can only put l plates on a moped so need to get the motorcycle prov added to it. does this cost me extra to add it on? do i need to get a new licence with an extra letter on the back of it? i'm a bit confused about it :p p[rob going to go in post office and ask or ring dvla tomorrow (or could pop in as i'm in swansea :p ) but as i think we are in the same boat thought i would ask here first.

also got an app for 3.99 on android so doing mock tests on there and has a good few hundred questions in all the different areas so working my way though that :) called uk motorcycle theory test ;)

You need to check your paper counterpart first, if you don't have A entitlement in the provisional box, you need a new license, if you do, you may continue.

ahh crafty, was wondering cos as i said only had the f moped thing on the back of my photoID but on the paper counterpart it has :

Provisional entitlemen
A from 22/04/04 to 09/03/57

:D

so this means i don't need to do anything with my licence and just go straight on to do my cbt and get a bike? would have thought i needed something on the back of my card? or should i just carry round the paper licence to show my entitlement?

No you don't need anything, you only get something on the back of your card when you've passed the relevent tests.

You can carry around your paper counterpart, but it would be highly unlikely you'd ever need to show it to anyone, so I wouldn't bother personally.

prob best to bring it when i do the cbt but prob wont bother after that. if they have a problem im sure they can call up and confirm :) cheers

You need it for the CBT, after that, the only time you'll need it is for the tests.

thought so. cool thanks :D rockign ym way through the app, done about 5 areas so far and lowest score i got was 86% :) still a few 100 Q's to go xD

Cheers for the info guys! I'm all booked in having a crack at those practice questions.

My Dad's old 600 Bandit keeps eyeing me whenever I pop round for a visit and he just happens to be looking to sell that and his 1200s to buy a CBF1300. Potentially perfect timing.
