Hi people,

I've recently started this bike riding thing as a way to lose some weight, however i now want (need) to do some work on the bike (a heavy-ish mountain bike) and am looking for a workstand. So, ladies and gents of Sports Arena, do you have any suggestions?

Many thanks

I got a cheapo Aldi one, hasn't dropped my bike yet. Left it on overnight before too.

Seems fine. If I wasn't bothered about money I'd get a park tools one

I got one of these, which ok for some things but as soon as you look at doing anything involving moving the wheels (gears/chain lube) it is useless, I use it combined with a wooden 'T' I made and used before for that... As I'm tight and refuse to pay £30+ on one!

Aldi have their cycling deals starting on thursday and there is a '2 bike stand' that looks more suited to storage (floor stands and fix it to a wall) but I imagine if the base was stable enough (or you adapt it in some way) it would be good for servicing (just ignore the lower storage hooks)? IIRC it was <£40 (not got my magazine here).

I've got a Lidl one. It's not bad quality but on full extension at the top I can't rotate the cranks without the pedal hitting it. This is frustrating because it means you can't adjust the gears with the bike on the stand.

Pic from Aldi 'this weeks specialbuys'

Looks like either side is adjustable for different bike layouts.

I hadn't considered it as it's too big for me! Sorry Peng, ignore my suggestion lol

Tart, was it flimsy? Awkward to use? I imagine it'd need to be fixed to a wall to get any real stability to it?

I fixed it to the wall - as you say, it requires it for stability.

To be honest as a bike stand it wasn't terrible. I'm perhaps being a bit unfair. It was just really awkward to use and set up. I've used a few work stands since and they're so much easier. Obviously they take up a lot more space though and can't store two bikes so... swings and roundabouts :)

I got the Aldi one last year and I've just replaced it with two bars that I've bolted to my garage that I bought from Halfords last weekend.
I've still got the labels on :D

And yes, you can turn the pedal arms no problem, there is enough distance.

Does the same job, takes up less space. I can't see any fault with that :p

It's brilliant and I don't know why I didn't do it 2 years ago but no doubt there will be a repair where it isn't ideal and I'll get the stand out.
When I was sizing them up against bikes in Halfords a couple of assistants asked me what I was doing and said what a great idea.
They were £4.99 each.

Oh there is one potential problem, the handlebars on an MTB/Hybrid have to be turned slightly but my road bike can go straight.

I've got one of these. Still going strong after many years of use, including bike cleaning duties.

One of these is ideal and really what I'm after but there's no way I'm spending over £30 on it... Might have to tax my dad's welder and make my own!

They look great and will work well, good job! Wish I had that much room in our garage and I'd do the same! :(
