Bikes : Dawes XC 1.6, any good?

I’m looking to get myself a bike (ridged tail mountain) to help with the beer belly and also keep up with my daughter who I’m planning on getting a bike for also.

Now from looking at various threads on here and other web reviews I was planning on setting myself a £300 budget and looking to pick up a non-current model to grab myself a bargain.

But recently at work I was given a small bonus of vouchers which could be spent on a restricted catalogue of items, this catalogue has a Dawes XC1.6 listed which I can see going for £260-300 online. If I order it from said catalogue it won’t cost me a penny but is this bike any good and worth the price or should I use the vouchers for something else and look elsewhere (bike suggestions welcome)?

Hmm looks like the XC via work is gonna be a no go, I'm after an 18" frame and they are only offering the 16 or 20".

Okay so back to the original plan, any bike recommendations with a budget of £300?

I've actually emailed HR to ask about the scheme, I know they used to offer it but I think they have stopped now, which if true is pretty disgraceful seeing as its one of the world’s largest financial firms based in the city centre.

Try get the Avalanche 1.0.

For £300 - HardRocks are very good.

I wonder if you can get a 2005-6 Rockhopper?
