Any advice for biking in France? Both general advice and nice places to go for a day trip starting in Calais.

Doing a trip in late August/early September to see the folks - as it's a silly long trip (1000km) but I'm intending a day trip before hand so that I'm not totally clueless on how the ferries and traffic in France work.

Went to Le Mans last year on the bike, and loved it.

Riding there is no different to riding here to be honest, just remember the traffic laws and speed ;)

Regarding ferries, all the ferry companies are well geared up for bikes.
Side stand, in gear and alarm off and they will strap the bike to cleats in the ferry deck. If you have one, an idea I picked up from another bike forum was to use a re-useable tie wrap and tighten it onto the front brake lever just enough to engage the brake.

Enjoy the trip!

Some mates of mine recently returned and told me in France and Germany there is now no filtering allowed.
