Bill S. 978 wtf america!

I don't understand all the outrage surrounding copyrights.

It's really not hard to stop listening to music illegally. It's not hard to stop watching films you haven't bought, etc, etc.

Life would not end if all the torrent sites closed down tomorrow.

not saying wtf to the film and music streaming im only talking about steaming tournaments and posting lets plays, reviews and such on youtube,i understand why the bill is being implemented but it is so broad that it harms things that in no way impede sales of copyrighted games,if this passes in its current state starcraft casters could face up to 5 years in prison and fines if they cast a game, and that is the most ridiculous thing ever.

1) surely it only applies to the states?

2) Won't the games company have to take you to court anyway in order to prosecute? which they won't do as it will harm player bases.

2 is a good point actually. Surely you're breaking the publishers copyright and they can just chose not to enforce it? It would just fall in the same category as abandonware where it would technically be copyright infringement but no-one actually cares.

This is a criminal bill, the companies report you, the police investigate you and if evidence is found you get taken to a criminal court where, if found guilty, you would face imprisonment for upto 5years and fined.

Well in that case I can't see how this would work practically. The police can't seriously investigate every case of this on the internet since their would literally be millions of people breaking this law.

I think that's the point - this is an amendment to existing laws. It won't be used to go after Joe Bloggs uploading vids to utube. It's to prosecute people who illegally stream stuff like football matches and such like over the internet.

Ah, see that makes the entire thing make much more sense. I can see why they would want to protect themselves against the TV streaming sites.

I can understand not being able to stream full movies etc. However, with video games I think the companies live on the hype that they get on the internet, people who watch COD, Warcraft videos etc don't do it because it saves buying the game, they'd watch it to get hints/tips etc on a game they already own. Dirt 3 for instance comes with an option to upload to Youtube, it's part of the experience.
