Some of you may know that today is the 25th anniversary of the death of the great Bill Shankly, the man who built Liverpool FC into the dominant force in English (and to a certain extent European) football in the 70's and 80's.

Shankly took a poor 2nd division side into a first division winning team within 2years, and laid the foundation for Paisley to take forward.

There are some interesting links:
BBC - Shankly memories
BBC - General piece on Shankly
website dedicated to him
Liverpool FC official site tribute

As a Liverpool fan, the guy is a legend and will never be forgotten and he ranks as one the people i'd most like to meet (given a time machine etc.).

legend of the highest order!

Nah the one uttered at Dixies funeral was the best imo.

The bloke embodies Liverpool Football club and he was a true great, we need more of him in football today, rather than the primadonas we have today.

Mark.

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

that is the full quote.

My favourite is: 'I know this is a sad occasion, but I think that Dixie would be amazed to know that even in death he could draw a bigger crowd to Goodison than Everton on a Saturday afternoon' – speaking at the funeral of Everton legend Dixie Dean

There will never be another Shanks, the man was a true legend, and a great guy. There isn't any other manager, who when clenaing his own car, invites fellow fans into his house for tea...

Respect for you shanks, you will never walk alone.

The term great is thrown about too often in this world, and way too often in football, but to describe this man as anything else would be a insult.

I'm not a Liverpool fan, far from it, but greatness has to be recognised, appreciated and hopefully emulated.

I hope and pray one day NUFC has its very own Shankly.
