Billion 7800N

I just tried this and got SNMP access without enabling Wan:

Thought I’d share my 7800N experiences with mid 50’s Attenuation line…

Tried all the popular Routers which use Broadcom 6348 or 6358 chips, found three that compared to others sync highest and maintain my telnet forced 6db SNR with ADSL2 or ADSL2+, which are the Billion 7800N, D-Link 2740B & Netgear DG834GT. However Billion 7800N syncs 200kbps more on average, and often holds connection for over a Month with decent line errors rate. The other two routers mentioned albeit far superior to many others I've tried, just simply can’t compete with the Billion 7800N, and end up having slightly more line errors during month long period or random re-sync or two, sometimes more.

As many have said before it really is a case of trying all the supposedly well rated routers, till you find one that suits your particular line.

Isn't it just

One question though. Max or ADSL2+ ?

My experiences with this Billion (unluckily) even though Broadcom chipset based modems have been the best on my line up to now, was not very good! So it went back to Amazon. Currently trying my old Speedtouch 585v6 again!

I think they will end up starting my 10 day "stabilisation period" again. As currently my 2+ speeds are worse than on MAX!

If this fails, it's time to try yet another modem/router. Think I'll give the TP-link TD-W8960N a whirl. While this is a pretty cheap router, I've got a friend that swears by it (in a good way) and says it performs better for him than some routers he has tried costing 3 or 4 times the money.

TBC for me at least.

Tried a W8960N and i thought he interface was terrible compared to my DG834GT and 7800N. Worth a try for the money though.
Why dont you try ADSL2 instead of 2+? What downstream attenuation are you on for 2+?

37dB with a 6dB target SNRM should (and did for the first 10 days at least) give me a rock solid 11Mbps sync and a 9.5 Mbps throughput. Then LOADS of problems/ issues, much too many to go all over again on this forum. HUGE 6 page thread on the thinkbroadband forum trying to discuss / sort it! Luckily my ISP (Newnet) has very good Customer / Technical support. I can't even begin to imagine what a nightmare (or should that be BIGGER nightmare) this would be to try and sort if it was an offshore call centre!!!

It's crap / faulty equipment at my newly C21/WBC enabled exchange (in my opinion) but just you get BT to "own a problem"! They lied both to me and my ISP for 2 months last year about there being a "hot VP issue" at my local exchange, only to eventually come clean and admit and finally address the problem! Not helped by something called "super stable" that they have been using on my line that appears to have also caused issues.

To sum up... basically my line looks fine, only a small amount of errors being clocked up (expected on a line some 2.4km+), SNRM pretty stable at all times (including the evening), the ISP confirmed this. But the DSLAM (or whatever it's called for 2+) still kept increasing my RX target SNRM (first to 9dB, then 12 and finally 15). So now speeds are slight worse than when I was on ADSL max!

Outcome is... Re-set everything for my line and start the "10 day stabilisation period again" (formally called "10 day training period"). And "yes" I know that a lot of people say this does not really exist! But hey, I'm only going by what the "experts" say.

You may be getting the gist that I'm pretty naffed off at the moment :(:(:(

PS. I bet you now wish that you had not asked!? Though thanks for your reply anyway :)

PPS. At least my broadband is usable. It's just the amount of time you end up trying to sort it. I've lost count of the number of hours I've spent up to now. Probably the best part of a couple of days so far.

Sounds like the kit at the exchange as mine was similar on Max to you on 2+, now on TalkTalk LLU kit and the connection is fine. I'm also on a 37dB d/s attenuation.

I have been running 1.06f firmware since Friday as it claimed "Fix issue whereby SNMP doesn't show correct statistics" and behold.... the FEC errors now appear to be outputted correctly. Not convinced CRC errors are correct but I've not had time to look into it properly.

FEC and CRC's now properly being output by SNMP :D

Might see if they fixed the missing OIDs when I get time.

Thanks...

No sign of improvement for me yet (early days I suppose). But if no resolution from Newnet. Then both TalkTalk (and I do appreciate that they get mixed reviews) and SKY are LLU at my exchange. Or I could move to an ISP like AAISP. While a bit expensive, they do have a reputation for pursuing faults VERY aggressively.

TBC (in it for the long haul... as they say).

I'm on TalkTalk LLU with XILO as my ISP, £26 a month for 50Gb broadband Pro and phone (they dont have any call packages though).

Question... is that what they call "partial LLU"?

Edit... I've just had a look at Xilo and they look pretty decent. Certainly get a good write up. So I've sent them an Email to see what they can do for me. Great find. Thanks....

An update:

The connection appears to be holding well on an SNR that has gone as low as 0.3dB. The connection has held for almost two days (I have restarted the router now to change the MTU setting)!

Xilo also have Be packages if your exchange has Be LLU. All packages are unmetered, one-month rolling contract as standard.

(They also have not been affected by the same problems as Be Retail customers have.)

Yes XILO use TalkTalk LLU as well as Be and C&W (IIRC). My package is phone and broadband but i think they do broadband only for ~£20 (you would have to check).
