I've got a TalkTalk Fibre connection. I'm using the Billion 8800NL as a modem in bridging mode connected to a TP-Link Archer C7, running OpenWRT.

I have previously used the Billion 8800NL as the router as well as the modem and the Internet was great. No hangups, always responsive, great.

With the 8800NL in bridging mode, connected to the OpenWRT router, the Internet is noticeably slower and less responsive. Pages sometimes take ages to load, WhatsApp messages take ages to send, etc.

Put the 8800NL as a router again and everything is fine.

What is going on?

Did you try dropping the MTU right down as suggested?

Did the problem occur with stock firmware on the Archer C7?

Do you actually need a router running OpenWRT? I'd be tempted to leave the 8800NL to work as the router and configure the Archer C7 as a WAP. It depends on why you wanted OpenWRT in the first place.

I've never had much luck with QoS, but maybe you've got it working better than I could. I'd turn it off first though to rule it out.
