Good modern boilers ae worth their weight in gold.

15 years with a new barn conversation I fitted a highly recommended high range boiler, one of the best on the market at the time.

A few years ago it kept breaking down time after time and would need a £100 here and then a month or two later another £100. In 6 months I had spent £400 plus all the hassle of no hot water when it breaks down.

Wish i had binned it when it broke down the first time but finally enough was enough and spent £2k on a new modern super efficient condensing boiler.

No change in how we heat the house or water but have been spending a third to a half less on heating costs each year since.

the new boiler paid for itself within 3 years.

We only have electric, but we do have Economy7, so immersion is set to heat the water for normal everyday use during the last ~2 hours of E7. Better half still yet to realise why I go barmy when she leaves immersion on after a daytime re-heat for a "hot" bath, despite telling her it is like heating a giant kettle. One day, I might change the bill name to hers, she might might finally understand!;)

That's for a large 4 bedroom detached house. I'm careful, LED everywhere etc. Most lights on dimmers.

wow thats half what use, do you have family at home all day or all out during day?

My boiler is ~30 years old and as far as I'm aware (touch wood, etc) it's never had a single issue . I'm holding out until it dies before replacing it.

Despite the fact I have gas central heating/water heater and a gas cooker my usage is pretty minimal so it would take a long time to pay back. Especially this time of the year at least :D:

Making your home energy efficent is all well and good but check that you are on the cheapest possible tariff or you'll still be paying too much.

I was stung by a big bill in a previous rental with electric heating / water heater and since then I've been far more aware of what we use by taking monthly readings. Moving to a place with gas was the biggest saving but things like LED bulbs (which are pretty damn good now, hated the early energy efficent bulbs) all help.

Can't be faffed with things like unplugging tv's / phone chargers, would rather just pay for it. :p
