Binocular overlap in VR

This is probably a silly question but in vr goggles do both screens show the same thing (from a different perspective obviously)? In normal vision there's only overlap for maybe the middle third... why can't VR copy that to get a wider FOV?

Or do they do that already?

Some VR headsets have good binocular overlap, some don't. One of the criticisms of the Quest Pro is it has poor binocular overlap. Not sure how the Quest 3 will be in that regard.

Surely you don't need it for the whole image, though I suppose it depends on where the image is - in front of or to the side of your eye.
