Not sure if this has been posted yet. I know there was talk about it a year or so ago when it was first announced.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7919645.stm

It uses a camera and video processor mounted on sunglasses to send captured images wirelessly to a tiny receiver on the outside of the eye.

In turn, the receiver passes on the data via a tiny cable to an array of electrodes which sit on the retina - the layer of specialised cells that normally respond to light found at the back of the eye.

When these electrodes are stimulated they send messages along the optic nerve to the brain, which is able to perceive patterns of light and dark spots corresponding to which electrodes have been stimulated.

Simply amazing in my eyes..

..sorry

But seriously, I didn't think we were this close to this, I remember reading a sci-fi from the 70s or thereabouts which had something like this in and thinking it was going to be a long time before we see that.

How long until fully working Bionic arms are developed and anyone can buy and upgrade !

I've always wanted a Bionic arm it would be so awesome :p

Sorry I de-rail :D

Amazing, but old. Has it really taken so long to go to trials. They where showing this of years ago.
Things like this and stem cells for broken spinal columns need fast tracking.

Still need to work a way out of having far more "pixels" and away of connecting it directly to teh optical nerve for people who's retinas can't transmit electrical signlas.

This was on TV last night, it is quite amazing. This is only the beginning, hopefully one day all lost sight will be restored using similar methods.

I want "see through clothes" glasses. But only girls clothes, and only sexy girls.

Nice idea, but then again if something like that came out (illegal) then I can see a massive rise in sexually pervation crimes haha.

On a more serious note to the original thread link, thats amazing and hopefully this can be developed further and people with severe sight problems can be given a way to see again.:)

Reminds me of that experiment I saw where they'd tried to install a Bio logical prcessor (think it was grown from rat stem cells) into a robot, saw a vid clip on it once don't know if they got it to do more than wonder around aimlessly but I was impressed with the Bio/Tech interface.

Why do you need stem cells if you can build a bio-tech interface you can use optic fibres for the missing section (or such).

I saw a documentary on TV a year or so ago about an American lady who had a bionic eye put into her.

It kind of worked but it only had a few "pixels" so she couldn't see much when it worked and unfortunately the project lost funding and she was left with 2 massive metal things sticking out her head.

I felt really sorry for her. I can only hope this tech advances until it is common place.

Incredible. I remember hearing something about this a while back, but I think they said it will only work for people who could once see, not those who have been blind since birth, because they have not developed an optic nerve. Still, I think it's amazing that we can restore sight to blind people. I just hope this technology gets the funding and development it needs to advance.

Yeah, they basically grew a rat brain, attached electrodes to it, and it seemed to process thoughts. Quite cool, but there were some ethical issues over it
