Bios keeps resetting/ GPU fans 100% for ages upon boot ??

Hello,

GPU fans go mental from fresh mains boot and my bios resets- not a battery issue.

I installed a 3700x having had a 2600. Prior to installation, I updated the bios and chipset drivers (am using a Gigabyte x470 gaming 7 MB). Upon the first boot, I was greeted by my GPU (EVGA 2080) spinning up to 100% for a solid 30 seconds then stopping, then spinning up again before finally posting and taking me to Windows. As this was the first time I thought nothing of it. Any restarts were okay with the GPU spinning up for about 5 secs before booting- this is usual, so all good.

However, if I switch the mains power off after shutdown and boot from fresh- my GPU shows the same weird behaviour- it spins up for a solid 30 secs- stops, then spins up and finally posts. In doing so, the bios is reset. This same procedure remains- restarts/ boots from mains left on are fine, but boots from mains off/on shows the same odd behaviour.

I changed the MB battery just incase- this had no impact. I reverted to different bios'- no impact. I reseated the GPU/ CPU/ memory/ battery and checked for loose cables- no impact. I have not overclocked/ changed voltages- all default. The entire build is 6 months old and the PSU is a Corsair 750. The computer was absolutely fine prior to installing the 3700x.

I am on the verge of just swapping back to the 2600 at this point and have spent ages googling but just cannot see straight now. I feel I am probably missing something hopefully obvious, so any ideas would be welcome to solve this issue.

Thanks and any help is massively appreciated.

I assume you've not left a jumper on the clear CMOS header, or someone resting on a button (maybe a cable?).

How do you know the BIOS is reset if you're leaving it stock?

Swapping the CPU will rule out the new CPU as an issue so why not try it.

Hey thanks for the reply- the clear CMOS jumper pins are clear.

After the GPU spins for the 30 sec and i go into the bios, there's a message that states that the bios settings have been reset. Yea, i'll try the cpu swap tomorrow. Not sure where it leaves me though if it all goes back to normal....hopefully the 3700x isn't a problem.

Cheers

I wouldn't rule out the battery still, just because it sounds so much like the culprit. Was it brand new and in date?

If the old CPU works fine I'd swap the new one in to rule out a bad mount, etc.

I would love it to be the culprit. The new one added is well in date and was brand new. I'll do a tear down tomorrow and triple check everything.

Out of interest- if the cpu was the issue, why would the GPU spin in the manner it does?

Many thanks.

I had a similar problem (slow post, some reboots but fine in windows), my ram was from a X99 system and needed some tweaks and now its ok (if a bit slower)

Run memtest for a bit to find out.

Hey Holst- my ram is the 8pack 16gb 3200 (14-14-14-31). When I encounter the bios reset issue it defaults to 2400 speed. I enabled XMP to get the correct speeds but it still has the boot issue. I had tried it at default speeds (2400) to see if that was an issue, but it still has the same bios reset problem. I will however do some digging around regarding the ram- thanks for the heads up.

Did you set memory voltage to 1,35V?
If memory voltage is too low, memory initialization might fail from cold boot and after some delay cause BIOS to "fail safe" and reset settings.

Memory voltage was on 1.35 with correct timings when XMP was enabled and it still caused the issue. Swapping memory slots had no impact either. I have just put the 2600 back in and like magic, it all works perfect as it did before- no GPU spin up/ bios reset from cold start. I can only imagine the motherboard/ bios just doesn't like my 3700x.

The 3700x was seemingly fine and in good working order when I was in Windows and playing games, etc- no alarming temps/ crashes/ blue screens. No idea where to go from here apart from waiting and trying it on a different board somehow.

Appreciate all the ideas.

Sounds like the memory is training / power cycling going on That in itself is actually normal and common to see when doing a cold boot, just sounds like in this instance it’s taking much longer then normal. Just seems to be the combination of your CPU / Moho and ram.

Could be worth having a look around bios (not clued you on gigabyte ones) as there are some fast boot / options to avoid memory training etc.
