I got myself parts for a new rig.
MSI X99S SLI Plus - TeamGroup 16GB 2400MHz DDR4 Intel X99 Motherboard Bundle + 5820K + Corsair 105H

Not sure I have applied the thermal paste properly after cutting bits out of my Case to fit the H105:)
CPU OCed to 4.2Ghz at 1.160v and RAM to 2666Ghz with same timings as 2400 at 1.3v and they seem to be fine. RAM have dedicated fans on them.
CPU Idle is around 28 with benchmark (Prime or OCCT) steady at 61 ± 2 degrees.

My question and sorry if others have asked but could not find the answer is about the BIOS settings, mosre specifically the CPU settings:
  1. EIST
  2. Intel Turbo Boost
  3. Enhanced Turbo

I kinda gathered what they do by googling around but still couldn't find a straight answer, I just have an idea. I would like to know the impact on OCing.

If I set the BIOS settings speed as FIXED the CPU is running at full blast all the time with temps around 38/40. If I set the settings as Dynamic Mode with all of the above enabled the CPU is sitting at 1.2Ghz idling at 28 degrees and boosting to 4.2Ghz when needed. The CPU voltage seems to stay as I set it at 1.158 regardless if it is 1.2Ghs or 4.2Ghz which I think is OK as one of the issues would have been the auto voltage which would screw up the OCing.

If I disable EIST but leave the other 2 settings on the Cores fluctuate (as in 1 core is at 1.2 the other is at 4.2, one up one down) between 1.2 and 4.2, after it goes through a benchmark all cores seem to stay at 4.2 and not fluctuate.

I would like to use the optimal settings, any feedback is much appreciated

What's optimal for one may not be optimal for another. I'm on a different platform (Z87) but since no-one on X99 has answered yet:

I like to have EIST, Turbo Boost, Enhanced Turbo enabled. Intel C States enabled (I just leave it on Auto). C1e disabled.

I use Dynamic and Adaptive Vcore and Adaptive Ring/Cache.

Some people do report that Fixed mode helps with stability. Thing is in my case, whether Fixed or Dynamic, my chip reaches the same max stable speed, so I stick with Dynamic to save a bit of power and not have so much voltage running through it.

And in Windows Power settings - Balanced mode (with the cores at 5% on idle).

When you are stress testing it's generally safer to do so with Fixed mode, as Adaptive can overshoot the voltage by 0.1v in some stress tests. Nothing to worry about at 1.16v (becoming 1.26v in such instances) though. Just something to watch out for if you start upping CPU voltage.

Generally it's recommended to find your max stable overclock on Fixed mode, and then convert it to Dynamic/Adaptive if desired.

That's great mate much appreciated. I will do a proper test using FIXED settings and then change them to yours as I prefer to have the CPU having a rest when not gaming.

I did have an issue with OCCT, seemed to fail after about 2 minutes but no indication why, I couldn't understand the screen-shots it creates. I might need to up the v to 1.2. However I was playing Heroes of the Storm and never had any crashes or issues.

Which stress test app would you recommend? I haven't really used Prime in some time but last time it was suggested 8 hours and as per above OCCT seems rather temperamental.

P.S. Related to Heroes of the Storm I have 4 beta keys, happy to give them away to OCUK users as I don't know anyone else that wants them. Mr Danny75 since you were the first to help me out here, if you want 1 or more for friends let me know.

I'm liking Asus RealBench lately (all four benchmarks in one go) and then the separate stress test. It catches instability pretty well. Sometimes I'll set an O/C that will pass the four benchmarks but then fail the stress test. Then benchmarks like Cinebench and FireStrike, Unigine Valley/Heaven.

After that which will give you a fair idea, best thing is to use your droid as normal and see if it's stable for the apps you use.

Very kind of you. Tempted to take you up on it out of curiosity but I will pass as I'm sure there are others who will take more advantage of it. Thank you very much though. :)
