BIOS reset itself to IDE mode after accidental shutdown, AHCI now not working properly

Sorry for long thread title. :p

Two weeks ago I accidentally shut my PC down or sent it to sleep when I was in the middle of something. I'd had a long day and was tired and just hit the wrong option. :(

After a while I got the PC working again once the BIOS had reset itself to its default settings. It wasn't until later that I realised it had gone into IDE mode and not AHCI for my SSD on W7. I noticed this because the Intel RST logo wasn't showing the green tick to show that the RST service was running.

I set the BIOS to AHCI over the weekend but I've been having problems since then. When I got home today both Outlook and Excel crashed when I opened them. I had to forcibly reset the computer and when I did neither the mouse nor keyboard were working. I pulled the USB cables out and replaced them. I was then able to login but Outlook and Excel crashed again. So I restarted again and put the BIOS into IDE mode. Everything is now working, Outlook, Excel, keyboard and mouse! :p However I obviously want to get back into AHCI mode.

What do I need to do in the BIOS and Windows to get my PC back into a working AHCI mode? Motherboard is an Asus P5Q-E (LGA 775) and my SSD is an Intel 160GB X25-M I think. Is it possible that when I moved my PC to a new case about month back that I plugged the SSD into the wrong SATA socket and so AHCI isn't working properly?:o

Thanks sunama. :) I'll try the manual fix and see how that works for me.

Update: It worked. Cheers. :) The PC was stuck on the glowing Windows icon for about 4 minutes but eventually I heard the sound of the Windows theme tune and was able to log in. All looks good so far!

Famous last words! PC hung when I tried to bring up the start menu. Restarting gave the old keyboard and mouse not working again issue so I'm back on IDE. I might give the memory sticks a test or even re-install Windows at the weekend. I think there's definitely something fishy going on here. :(

Yeah. That'll be a weekend job. I need to set the BIOS to AHCI before I install Windows? That's what's causing this problem? BIOS was set to IDE when I installed W7 so Windows ignored the AHCI drivers and now that I need them it won't use them.
