BIOS resets

My bios reset itself everytime i turned the pc on, so i figured a new battery was in order. Whilst doing this I figured that after 2.5 years it was time to reinstall xp. Despite getting the error windows root><system32\hal.dll I finally managed to reformat and reinstall xp. When i tried to connect to the net it wouldn't allow me, so after checking the settings i restarted the pc. The bios has reset itself again. I have checked that the battery is seated correctly, but other than the battery being duff, could any other problem be causing this? Also, i'm now stuck back at the system error, despite changing the boot priority to hard drive first,cd rom second and due to the bios resetting itself, everytime i turn the pc off/on it looks for a floppy that isnt there. Next step is to plug a floppy in just to see if it clears the error msg.Any help is greatly appreciated.

The BIOS resets from what ? are you overclocking? once the BIOS and reset does the PC run normally ?

Could be a faulty or corrupt BIOS chip, which can be replaced. I suggest (at own risk) flashing the BIOS for the latest version. This could kill the BIOS if it's faulty or cure if its corrupt. I suspect the new battery is ok if bought from a good shop.

When you say it has reset, what do you mean exactly? Does it simply detect drives or ask you to set-up BIOS? Are you certain that after changes, you did save and exit?

When i said the bios resets, i meant that the clock/date etc resets, i have replaced the chipset fan with a fanless heatsink, so i have disabled the chipset fan warning and because i removed my floppy drive long ago, i set the boot priority to hard disc first, otherwise i was getting a system error. I make all the necessary changes and hit F10 to save and exit, however, on restarting the pc the bios/cmos?(not sure what term is correct) has reset back to default, ie date 2003/jan/01:i get a warning-chipset fan too low and the boot priority goes back to floppy-hd-cd rom etc. I havent overclocked or changed any hardware. The pc was running slow anyway, so when i put a new battery in i reinstalled xp pro, reformatting the hd and a fresh install rather than repairing.
