It appears that video game developers these days are complete morons, so to stop my copy of Fear 3 from giving me a blue screen of death, I have to update my BIOS on my motherboard ASUS M5A78LM LX.

I downloaded the updates in form of a .ROM file, I understand these have to be booted up from a flash disk, which is doable, but if anyone knows if ASUS have stopped be prehistoric and have any .exe files that update the BIOS, could you please help me? Thanks.

if you get the .cap version of the file you can just drop it on your C drive and navigate to it from the update bios page.

If your mobo is supported you can use AI Suite to do it from within windows

I've looked on their site and found all the updates, but they only download as .ROM files, how do I access the AI Suite? I'm quite new to PC's.

Thanks. :)

Never update a BIOS through Windows, it's riskier updating that way.

Paste the ROM onto a USB drive, go into BIOS, and update it with EZ-Flash 2.

Yes it is. It's a seperate program on the motherboard (not Windows) that deals with flashing the BIOS. Do you know how to access the BIOS?

Well I put the flash drive into my PC and reboot into BIOS and place the flash drive as the 1st thing to load, right?

Also; I have found which BIOS update I'm running and downloaded several updates from that point, do I need to update version to version or will the latest update completely update it all?

Thanks mate. :D

No, you don't set it to boot from the flash drive.

You only need the latest one.

So I'm assuming you know how to access the BIOS if you know how to change the boot order. There's two ways of accessing EZ-Flash 2:

1) Go into BIOS, then the Tools menu, then select EZ-Flash 2
2) Press Alt + F2 during POST

Once you're in there, find the ROM file and it will update it for you. Once it's done the system will restart. There's more detailed instructions on page 2-2 in the manual.

just run the latest one.

Turn on and go into bios, the bios update function is in the advanced mode of your bios normally on the far right hand page.

It won't even detect my flash disk :/ does it matter if the device has other files on it? I can use my portable HDD if it doesn't.

Thanks!

EDIT: How do I backup my current BIOS? I really don't want this to go wrong and not have a PC, thanks!

Nope. Could try a portable drive and see if that works. If EZ Flash can detect your internal harddrives you could paste the ROM there and see if that works.

The BIOS is a chip on the motherboard, not on any of the harddrives, so it's very unlikely that you can enter EZ Flash and not have a BIOS...

No I mean if it doesn't update properly when trying it from an internal device, wouldnt it just go HERP DERP in the process and remove any BIOS I have? Things I've read on the internet hint that can happen, which is why I really want to backup my BIOS before I do anything like this.

Thanks :)

Your board has a feature called CrashFree BIOS 3, this will recover the BIOS if the update fails and corrupts the current one. So you don't need to worry if something goes wrong.

does it just blue screen in fear3? no other games? updated/patched the game to latest one? could be memory setting/voltage if its crashing in games

take a pic of each bios screen/setting on your phone then you wont lose your oc settings

Fear 3 is updated and fully verified via Steam, the second I launch it, my screen goes into a pixelated mess and I get a BSoD. Reading around online I've found out that Steam's DRM heavily conflicts with AMD Hardware, mainly processors. Almost every motherboard manufacturer out there have updated their BIOS to stop this, so even if I didn't want Fear 3 anymore and somehow got my money back, there's a chance with every game I download from Steam that this could happen. So this update is mandatory.

Why Steam don't just get their thumbs from up their rectums and sort this out themselves I have no idea. It's Valve as well, they must be getting lazy or something.

Thanks guys! You've been a ton of help, I've noticed this forum is faster and more reliable than almost any customer service I've dealt with in the past, ocUK should pay you lot. :D
