I have never updated a BIOS in my life and my dad put the scares on me about them a few years back so i never thought any more about it.

However, is it a deadly art or do ytou just have to be careful?

Do you really need to update your BIOS? If everything is working just fine, then don't bother. Is there some feature that the new BIOS unlocks? Or improves stability whilst overclocking?

Ah, I kind of understand you. I did my first ever BIOS update yesterday with my aBit iP35 Pro motherboard, what I did was do lots of readings on forums and such until I built my confidence. There are loads of guides on how to flash the BIOS which would really help you.

Still, if you're in doubt you can ask the people here in the forums for some advice.
And always make sure that you follow the instructions as stated.

This is what all the manufacturers advise. BIOS updates can be dangerous and there's no need to flash unless you're certain it will bring worthwhile benefits. For example, my current board is running the stock BIOS, which is pretty old now, and superceded by many versions, but I don't see any need to upgrade.

Also don't flash from Windows as the likelyhood of bricking your board is much higher.

Well, as cje said, there's no point in upgrading he BIOS unless the new BIOS includes some new features that you'd use/benefit from, or the old BIOS is causing you problems.

Providing you get the correct BIOS BIN file, copy it correctly to CD/Floppy/pen drive and don't interrupt it while it's installing then you'll be fine. I've never had a single problem with BIOS upgrades.

*WARNING*
Do not touch your Bios if you don't know what you are doing let alone try to update it.

Read & then read some more & then post about what you are unsure about & then go read some more before you start messing about with something that can kill your system/mobo stone dead.

Only one sentence is important when it comes to Bios updating & that is "If you don't need to then DON'T !!!!!"

For those that cannot resist or actually need to then Buy new floppys & test one of the batch First. Then download the new Bios from a trusted source. Also turn off anything in back ground & do not share your connection whilst downloading or updating. Run spyware scans & clean up your system Before updating, Give your system the best chance of taking the new Bios & get the new Bios onto a Decent floppy from a Decent source & it is actually Easy to do.
There is Always the potential to Damage your system though so be fair warned & read up a bit more Before starting.

i've bricked a board before doing it =( and i followed all of the instructions perfectly, it just decided not to post anymore, lol, its not worth it unless its essential, luckily most motherboards have backups these days

i update it nearly everytime theres a new bios. i only ever had 1 motherboard fail while updating due to a crap bios.

most motherboards now have recovery system.
