My Asus P7P55D-E / i5-760 has been running and stable at 4 GHz for about a year now. Though when it has nothing to do it sits cool and quiet at 1.4 GHz through EPU-6 Auto mode.

Unfortunately 2 days ago I used ASUS Update to update my BIOS to the latest version, 1504 - previously it had been at version 1002. Since then I've had a lot of difficulty getting back to 4 GHz, plus lots of crashes. I hadn't written down all my BIOS settings, because I'd saved my profiles for 3800 MHz, 4000 MHz and 4200 MHz (the last had worked but risked overheating). HOWEVER I can't load any of those profiles now; the error message implies they're incompatible with v1504.

What experience have people had with BIOS versions for the P7P55D-E? I'm wondering whether to revert to v1002.

Why did you update the BIOS?

Unless you needed to for a specific reason, such as compatability with a new component, then you should stick with what works.

If v1002 was the best BIOS for you then go back to that.

The first mistake you made was to use Asus update. Never, ever use Asus windows updating software. You should have used EZ-Flash in the bios.

The second was why did you update if it was running fine?

The profiles are only good for the bios version they were made under. You will just have to start from scratch to find the settings all over again.

I guess we're so trained to always look for the latest drivers/software version/whatever that it seemed a good idea to get "improved system stability and improved memory compatibility", as promised on the Asus site. Now I've investigated a bit more, I see they say that every new version...

So why not use Asus Update? The ROM files are the same so the code loaded into your BIOS will be the same. Is the problem what might happen if Windows (or the program) crashes while writing to the BIOS, leaving it in an unworkable state?

pastymuncher, I see you have the same RAM and CPU as I do, and the Pro version of my motherboard. What BIOS version do you have? Also, do you use DOCP, XMP or neither? (I'm sure I used XMP for a while before, and my RAM is rated for it, but it doesn't seem to work well for me now.)

BTW I have now got my PC running from 1446 to 4000 MHz depending on load again, with BIOS v1504 - but I'm still wondering whether to revert to an earlier version.

Finally - lessons for anyone else reading this: don't update your BIOS if you don't have to, but if you do, make sure to WRITE DOWN all your BIOS overclocking settings first!
