BIOS virus?

Hi there,

I was running youtube when in the middle of video everything froze with a glitchy sound coming from the speakers; not a good sign, in the past on my other PCs this indicated the start of a hardware failure.

Anyway, the PC was working fine after I restarted fora few hours, which after I left the PC and my brother went on it overnight and left. The next morning, I turn on the PC and softwares such as Internet Security and Malware Defense are installed and started up (knowing how many times my brother has been to various (read: dodgey) websites I wasn't surprised). Well, my first impression is these are all malware in anti-malware disguise and a quick search showed I was right. I installed Ad-Aware and removed all malware it could remove.

Unfortunately after that day I started seeing random messages popping up my PC:

"Google installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" pops up every now and then. I don't have any Google software (no Chrome, Earth etc.) on my PC, nor I can find Google Installer in my list of installed software in Control Panel.
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" pops up every time I right click on desktop (and when Windows Explorer shuts down you might as well shut down the computer)

Also WoW crashes every now and then but the error indicated a DirectX or driver issue.

Unfortunately I can't install any anti-virus on my computer as all of them either freeze midway through installation (like AVG) or install but don't run at all (like Kaspersky 2010).

The worse thing is the PC freezes on start up 3 out of 4 times I turn it on. and worst, is that my BIOS screen doesn't show up anymore! (when I switch on it goes straight to Windows without showing any other screens like "Energy" or "Gigabyte Dual BIOS" etc) so I can't even format and re-install Windows. I suspect there is a virus that might have screwed my BIOS or something.

PS: I didn't have an anti-virus on my PC (and still don't) when all this happened. Running Windows XP 32-bit.

Thanks in advance and have a good Christmas (doubt if I'm gonna have a good one with all this though) :(

Have you tried downloading 'hijackthis'?

If you can get it to run, get it to create a text file log, and analyse it here: http://www.hijackthis.de/

If that is sucessfull, then kill off any bad processes in hijack this, and the attempt to intsall spybot s&d (remember to update it and run the imunisation update)
and malwarebytes and Ccleaner.

If theats then successfull, you can re-attempt to install some AV software.

It will take a while to do all this but it should sort it- or atleast improve it to a point where you can do further investigation.

Legal Windows???

But as above, Combofix and Malwarebytes normally fix most things...

Its always good to run a a few security apps, as some pick up stuff that others miss.

I find a good combo is: AVG antivirus, Spybot S&D, Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, and HijackThis.

I have known Spybot to pick up stuff that Malewarebytes misses, and vice versa.

If restore is turned on your computer, switch it back to a time before your problems started - its far from brilliant but it has worked for me many times with sudden errors.
If not,
combofix, malware bytes anti malware and superantispyware. Win.

Thats the possible software fixes (and reinstalling XP)

I don't think pointing out that is going to help is it lol

You have spyware on your system. Malware Defense is a fake antivirus program.

I recommend Malwarebytes, update it and run it. After which get avast anti virus, update it before you restart your computer for the boottime scan, And let it do a full sweep. :)

At the above reinstall XP suggestion, with so many programs out there these days that can fix nearly ALL malware problems. a reinstall is rarely required.

Just a quickie as I don't think anyone has pointed it out yet - When running any of the above mentioned AV or Anti Malware apps, before you do so switch off System Restore just in case any of the "nasties" are hiding in the Windows Restore volume.

And also, you want to boot into Safe Mode and run these apps from there otherwise theres a good chance you wont get rid of the "nasties" completely.

After you get it fixed - YOU REALLY NEED SECURITY - there are all kinds of nasty embedded stuff that will infect and slow your system - pop ups and hijacks to web sites you dont want to visit are common. Installing of fake security is VERY common and a royal PITA -as your experiencing!

Good luck

You need to give your brother his own standard account to do his browsing, and make sure things like Windows and Flash player are up to date.

The problem is if you're installing cracks for software then you're really peeing in the wind in terms of keeping malware off your system. If you play with fire you'll get burnt sooner or later - simple as.

Actually Process Monitor and Autoruns are probably far better than some program I have never heard of. Plus I would avoid anything that says it can make your PC run faster.
