Quick question, my dad loves bioshock and has played it though a few times now, I gave him one of my xbox 360 controllers to use with it as he can't get the hang of KB+Mouse.

Now he's bought Bioshock 2 and for some reason there doesn't seem to be and pad support whatsoever! Anyone know the reason for this and/or any way to remedy the issue?

Yep the reason no gamepad support is 2K got lazy and it only supports kb+mouse despite it being a console game on PC & the UT3 game engine supports gamepads natively 2K chose to disable that even though Bioshock1 worked great with gamepads

Try downloading xpadder for free as that can map kb+mouse to gamepads otherwise wait for 2K to patch it!

I thought games had to natively support the 360 controller to attain Games For Windows branding?
Only if the game supports gamepads must it support the 360 controller. Otherwise if its mouse+kb only then no gamepad support is needed to get the branding.

I was looking at >>THIS<< this a few days ago while checking to see if they had resolved the mouse acceleration issue from BioShock.

The relevant part:

Did you change the UI/HUD for the PC version of the game?
We made quite a number of significant changes to UI / HUD for the PC version of the game. The decision was made early on not to support controllers at all in order to ensure that we got the mouse and keyboard control absolutely right. This of course required a redesign of large parts of the UI and the player HUD. For example, we removed the Weapons and Plasmid Selection Radials in favor of a custom created Weapons Selection Strip which more accurately reflects the keyboard layout.

This is all fascinating but WTH is wrong with simply using XInput as they did in BioShock 1? They still had a proper keyboard/mouse setup using function and numerical keys so all this is just complete gibberish.

Or was BioShock 2 done by a group of interns who had never seen/played BioShock 1?

Well in all fairness, the mouse lag and interface issues on the PC version of Bioshock was frankly ridiculous and inexcusable for what was supposed to be a major release for the platform but ending up feeling like another console port. I think they did the right thing this time in actually prioritizing mouse and keyboard controls this time around, although it eludes me that the option to use a controller was taken out altogether. At least we know it's coming in a patch soon.

I wouldn't say it's laziness. I would say it's shoddy programming that they have to focus on keeping certain features out just to make the standard stuff work. It shouldn't happen that developers have to cut gamepad support out just so they can get keyboard and mouse to feel right. If games like Crysis and Fallout 3 work exceedingly well with both m/kb and gamepads, why can't Bioshock 2, with its multi-format friendly engine?

Bioshock2 mouse+kb controls which 2K claim to have spent additional time/money are a total joke

The controls are really jerky especially the mouse aiming & some of the keys even get stuck at critical moments as in you press the key & nothing happens  for such a high profile game 2K really have given PC gamers the worse version as the gfx are sub-par in many places worse than Bioshock1 & the control scheme is both awkward & unwieldy without a gamepad as clearly the console game design was meant for gamepads

MP is also so laggy & poor right now with some really poor gfx which look even worse than the SP mode as they are clearly dumbed down to fit on consoles

This is yet another if a long line of sub-par PC ports but if like me you already bought the game & played online your stuck with it as you cannot sell due to the DRM used.

im the same

normally i prefer KB+mouse for FPS games but with the first bioshock and fallout 3 i used the game pad because with those 2 games KB+M controls didnt feel smooth and fluid like say something like quake or cod

Has that recently been changed? I could have sworn gamepad control was a must. (Maybe they made some changes to let RTS games appply for GFW branding).

The Games For Windows caertification has never said that all titles SHOULD support he 360 pad o matter what, it only has to support it if the game itself uses gamepads.

1.4 Support the Xbox 360 Common Controller for Windows [Conditional Requirement]
Requirement
Games that support gamepad controllers must support the Xbox 360 Controller for Windows using the XInput API. If DirectInput peripherals are also supported, then DirectInput can also be used. However, XInput must be the default API if an Xbox 360 compatible device is used.

All references to common controller triggers and buttons must use the Xbox 360 names. See the Xbox 360 Common Controller for Windows Terminology list for details.

Controller vibration must be turned off when the game is in a paused or suspended state.

Mouse/keyboard control cannot be fully disabled at any time. At a minimum, an option to return to game menus must be available.

Rationale
This requirement gives gamers freedom of choice to use either the Xbox 360 controller or the keyboard and mouse, depending on which input method is more natural and intuitive interface.

Additional Information
This requirement does not apply to games that use only the mouse and/or the keyboard.

We recommend that menu navigation be implemented to use the widely accepted standard controller buttons:

A - Accept

B - Cancel

Start - Accept or pause

Back - Cancel, back one screen or up a menu level

Mouse movement for me isn't smooth, as in moving diagonally is a complete mess.
This happens frequently on poorly ported over games, some people can't notice it (just like people that cannot notice higher bitrate soundtracks, or graphical anomolies), same goes for movement here.

Glad I didn't pay for it, I'd have wanted my money back purely for that reason alone.

There are a number of possibilities, I'm surprised you need to ask, want to know and can't assume.
Were you even sincere?

Anyway, after playing it seems it's only the menu, though sensitivity is a bit higher than I like at maximum.

So you bitched about the handling of the game before you'd even played it? M'kay then.

Added to AWPC's hysterics above, have we reached a new high watermark in "PC gamer moaning" history? Seems like there isn't even any sort of threshhold for what constitutes a legitimate gripe anymore; it's like write-in-your-own-complaint, and we'll all just say that the game is borked.

It matters not if it is or isn't, the important thing is getting to whine about stuff.

Why are so many PC gamers such joyless depressives?
