Take-Two Interactive announced today that BioShock 2 was officially in the works, under the development wing of the recently formed 2K Marin studio. The sequel—rumored to actually be a prequel—to the Xbox 360 and PC shooter is planned for a fourth-quarter fiscal 2009 release date. Take-Two's fiscal year matches the calendar year, so expect it to hit unspecified platforms (read: Xbox 360) before the '09 holidays.

Take-Two also noted that the original BioShock has 2 million unit sales under its belt since its August '07 release. No pressure, 2K Marin! No pressure at all.

They messed the loyal fans around too much with BioShock 1 so I for one won't be buying this one...

(unless they release an editor too)

Great news. Please please don't mess this up.

Bioshock is one the best games I've played in years but I have a feeling this will not live up to expectations...

I hope I'm wrong. :) I feel there is quite a bit of scope left in Bioshock. But expect a proper ending this time.

I hope there's a deeper element of character development more similar to SS2 than to BS1, felt too dumbed down for me.

Didn't think the graphics were that great in the original and the gameplay didn't grab me. Doubt i'll be buying a sequel.

I'm very close to the end of Bioshock, but I haven't played it since release. It just got... boring.

The game is great, but certain innovation can only stretch so far.

When I first heard of a FPSRPG with steampunk styling, I was excited, needless to say the way Bioshock turned out I was severally disappointed, a mediocre FPS in my eyes, nothing new. Pretty much System Shock 2 re-skined with dry pasta stuck on PVA glue.

Will be giving this one a miss.

I think the biggest problem this game could have is if the developers just go for more of the same i.e. go through the game saving/harvesting little sisters for adam etc, hopefully with this being a prequel it will force them to come up with another original concept like they did first time around. On that subject any word on whether it will be the same team that made the first game working on this?

I hope the game doesn't look just as big and chunky on high res as low, great engine (although they didn't make it) quite low detailed massive repetitive objects. Although it would probably be a bit more demanding.

Im sure they get the story spot on this time too.

I thought it was a pretty dull generic start at A, goto b following arrows - i really dont see why it got the praise that it got, extremely over rated.

Yeah, the cool kids disabled the quest arrow and all that jazz :)

Even then though, everything was far too clearly marked on your map. Was a bit annoying :/
