As can be seen here:

2K Forums link

This happened to me. The patch downloads in the background, AVG free claims it is a virus and if you delete it your .exe file goes too.
The common theme seems to be AVG but if you turn it off it still happens.

To fix, AVG must be removed

ahh cr*p, your right... its just done it to me! I went to make a copy of the .exe for protection and AVG showed a threat, and windows crashed... its screwed my .exe up now and I cant play.

Now im annoyed!

Do I uninstall AVG to fix it? Or will I have to reinstall BioShock?

Ahh kinda fixed it, closing AVG dont work, but go to the Resident Shield and deactivate that, then the game boots... but I have not anti-virus now

Im sure a fix will come soon! in the meantime ill just deactivate resident shield when I want to play!

If you go into the program folder OR the save game folder (My Documents/BioShock for example) AVG will pop up with a threat on both, so it sees the saves and the .exe as a virus

You have to disable Resident Shield to get round it, but ANYONE with AVG will get this problem... if they updated today that is!

oh this will do wonders for 2k. all the problems with limited acitivation, and now ALREADY people are going to have to reinstall. (unless a hotfix is released, soon)

If you tell AVG to remove you will have to, luckily for me I read this post first so knew it was a false alarm, so I told AVG to ignore it. Then disabling Resident Shield lets me in, closing AVG control centre isn't good enough, you have to disable the shield in the control centre.

But if you told AVG to remove, then I doubt you will be able to get it back... I hope this is fixed soon cos I have to keep Resident Shield closed all the time now, otherwise I get random "Threat Detected" prompts!

I don't use AVG (antivir is more my cup of tea) but don't virus files normally just get moved to a quarantine area at first? You may be able to restore the file from there.

And so the AVG problem has found it's way onto the OcUK forums... you should check out the official 2K forums  So many posts regarding this problem... it's ridiculous.

Just happened to me, AVG always does this crap. Disabling resident shield and creating a new shortcut works.

Creating a new shortcut wouldn't work would it? Unless you mean with resident shield deactivated aswell? If thats the case, with resident shield deactivated the original .exe works, but I cant see having a new shortcut to the original .exe working if resident shield screws that exe up.

.... did that make sense?

No problems here as an AVG user. Have had false positives before with S.T.A.L.K.E.R, but it prompted me for action. Can't you just get AVG to prompt you for action then choose ignore?

If you have updated AVG today, then I'm sure you will get the prob if you go to the bioshock folder. Make sure you press "IGNORE" and you will be fine... well your BioShock will not start no matter what you press, until you deactivate Resident Shield, then you will be able to play

They need to stop using aggressive copy protections on games, the people that play pirated would not buy it anyway if they can't play a pirated copy so it only annoys paying customers.

Just look at he amount of things you need to do before you can play a game like Bioshock, it's ridiculous, not to mention the problems you can get when you need to reinstall.

I just want to pop in the DVD, install the game, remove the DVD and start playing.

Why's everyone giving 2k the boot for this? If AVG is the only antivirus it's affecting, shouldn't Grisoft should be blamed?
(That's not a rhetorical question btw - I'm genuinely asking :) )
