Bioshock hands-on preview

well, look at this:

in one of the videos they showed couple of bulets hit the glass at the top and no cracks and no water came through, no real physics in this game. just seems to be too consoley to me.

dunno, the last 2 games out on pc that used the UE3 performed crap. could be the engine is just crap to begin with. wonder whats better, UE3 or Cryengine2 ;)

It's most certainly not. PC devs just aren't used to it yet (the awful ports from consoles aren't doing it's rep much good either). The 360 is kicking out some excellently running titles. Hopefully it'll be the same story on the PC soon, and CryEngine 2 does look very interesting!

I really want to make a Jurassic Park mod with it, that'd be the dogs danglies.

Actually from looking around Bioshock uses it's own engine and has bit's of the UT3 engine. So it dosn't really have much or any relation to the R6V engine.

Also the reason Im so attracted to this game is because I know how immersive it's going to be and I love the Art Deco and the 60's feel to the game. I seriously cannot wait :D

You're going off Vegas? The terrible console port?

its a damn good game though. could be that it actually is too much for the pc to handle. the gfx are very good indeed, bar the crap textures.

when battlefield 2 came out people said it was badly programmed
then fear came out and people said its badly programmed
now its rainbow 6 vegas
then test drive unlimited
then colin mcrae dirt

but what people fail to see is that the gfx of these new games really are good so the demand of more powerful hardware does make sense.

only thing that throws this out of the water is farcry. the game looks awsome yet runs one even crap hardware at very decent speeds. hard to say though, but bioshock as mentioned above uses a custome engine, or a hacked UE3 engine then its performance will be different to rainbow 6 vegas and that other robot game, but the next unreal tournament game is deffo based on the UE3 and as far as i can tell its gonna perfrom just the same as rainbow 6 vegas, although when the game comes out hardware will have evolved to the next level.

But Fear came out on PC first and runs way better on PC in higher resolutions. No one puts any effort into optimizing performance in ports these days, especially console games to PC since they're gonna sell sod all. You just have to look at all the 360 games running badly on the PS3. All ports are just rushed out with as little effort as possible.

If you look at a game that was written with both 360 and PC in mind, like Oblivion, a decent PC (not SLI, not even an 8800) will run it in higher resolution and at better framerates and it's using higher res textures on PC.

Whilst I shouldn't be the one to complain as I do the opposite, every single BioShock thread has Mav in it complaining about it. I'm yet to see anything more than "I don't like the look of it". Surely you've got a deeper reason than that? Enlighten us ;)

I'm finally on the net at home again..time to catch up on 500000000 podcasts and the like.

You're really wrong, Vegas was terribly ported to the PC, Unreal Engine 3 runs on PC very well as long as developers put the effort in. That is all that is missing at the moment, it's nothing to do with it being a crap engine or the hardware being too slow at the moment.

why would they need to port rainbow 6 vegas to the pc if as you say the unreal engine 3 is built up for the pc? something is deffo not right there.

While the game looks like it's going to be very good (this isn't a knock as such), it looks like it's going to be a good shooter rather than anything else. I've never played System Shock so don't know what the fuss is, but from what I've read this game's needs more RPG creepiness than it has.

I'm hoping it's going to take a little longer than the standard 10-15 hours to complete as well.
