on-line activation
i want to buy this game badly, the only thing stopping me from doing so is......
will i be able to give it to a relative after i have finished it ?
will on-line activation prevent me from doing so ?

I doubt it, at least you couldnt with half life 2, could you?

Therell be a crack out prolly hours before its realeased though.

Well, if you buy the steam version then definetly not, but the retail version is anotehr matter.

i have let my brothers borrow half life 2 and just given them my login details so they use my account. if you are not playing the game at the same time then it works out fine.

That is a very risky strategy unless they live close to you. Account sharing is easy to spot by monitoring IP dresses that are accessing the account and i know for sure that Valve do this with Steam.
If they are sharing the same computer or are in the same house then that is another matter entirely, and is one reason why Steam is so damn good. Same games on any computer that you use ready to be played after login. I love it. I can play all my games at home in the holidays and then all of them at Uni during term time without having to lug the games about back and forward.

I don't think its risky at all, i have steam installed on my laptop and never had a problem using it in many different countrys

One of the main selling points of Steam was that you could play your games on any pc with capable hardware anywhere in the world.

surely thats the idea of steam, for example i go home, log into steam install on my dads computer and play the game.

Or i could go to the other side of the world, install game then log out. Why do they monitor IP addresses as you could have simply gone on a relatives comp.

Unless you login to steam then 2 minutes later someone logs in on your account in australia or something

Steam is meant to be portable, their own support forum tells you this, including that you can move your entire Steam Director between machines. That's how I did it when re-building my current machine (IE. just moved the entire directory over).
