Hi all,

I currently have the following:

Athlon X2 4200
2GB Corsair DDR400
A8N SLI Premium
X1800XT Zalman Cooled

Now im getting a new Samsung 226BW 22" Widescreen monitor. So the question is.... If i get a 2900XT and run vista will my 2GB memory be enough to run Bioshock on the res for the new monitor on high detial do you think or stick to XP with only DX9?

I no Vista is memory hungry and would ideally like 4GB but money is a bit of a problem at the mo.

So is it worth getting a 2900XT and running Vista (for DX10 :D) with 2GB memory

I have a 2900xt vista and 2gb of ram also play at that resolution and have preordered bioshock, hope it will run on high but I dont think anyone will know until the game is out.

If you havent decided when the game comes out in a couple of weeks I will tell you :D

I suspect the Bioshock demo may be released very soon. The 360 demo has been released just today so the PC version shouldn't be far off. That would give you a decent idea of how it will run.

I should warn you i had that motherboard, and then i Got that 2900XT, and it sits right on top of the chipset, my PC kept overheating so now im having to buy new hardware :P

Just a warning thought, you might not want to overclock like me :P

Ive overclocked the CPU a little but not bothered about the 2900

One of the guys i sat with at the i31 LAN had a nice setup with vista and 2GB of RAM. He did previously have 4GB until a stick busted and he had to RMA it. He said he really noticed quite a difference between 2GB and 4GB. So i guess the more memory you have, the better, especially with Vista.

Mind i don't think his PC was that stable as he was overclocking it quite carelessly...

If it runs the games he wants and allows him to do everything he wants. Then i see no problem with it. Hes gaining extra smootheness by pushing his pc past the 12 hours orthos or what ever you people like to swear by.

I plan on overclocking a Q6600 go to what ever seems to be good to me. Ill probly just run it through the most cpu intense game i have at the time. If it runs fine with good temperatures then im happy.

Don't think anyones gonna really know about memory requirements under Vista or DX10 performance until the demo hits, but I would definitely get either a 2900XT or 8800 GTS since I can't see an X1800 XT running it in 1680*1050 on high settings.

That's based on my old X1800 XT and my new 8800 GTS running R6Vegas (UE3) at 1680*1050. I know Vegas wasn't the best port ever, and Bioshock will scale down to midrange PCs much better, but if you want all the eye candy in Bioshock then Vegas is a decent benchmark for Bioshock performance I think.

I don't think whether you plan to run DX9 XP or DX10 Vista really affects whether or not you need a new video card for 1680*1050 on high details (indications are that you do).

People really do get the wrong idea about Vista, its requirements and this "memory hunger".
People see that they are running 2GB, see that the system is using nearly all 2GB and assume that they need more memory.
Whereas WinXP sat back and never really attempted to use all of the resources available to it, Vista does.
What you see with a Vista machine running with 1GB or 2GB of RAM is the OS effeciently using all of the available resources it can - Running as close to 100% as it can whilst still reserving a very minimum amount of resources for other features.
Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot game effeciently under 2GB or really even 1GB of RAM under Vista.
