Bioshock reviews

It needs two more reviews, then it can go on the top ten rankings of all time on that site. People can then say it's the best game ever made on a technical standing. :D

I wonder if this will be a game worthy of the 'best ever game' plaudits that seem to go around, unlike Half Life 2 which was good, but very overrated and hardly worth the plaudits it recieved.

Seems nice that a game which is well anticipated is coming out and actually getting well reviewed, unlike other games which have been in the making for a while and come out and been dire (ie Daikatana for one).

I would mention Crysis, but I dont want to tempt fates, never mind the cyborg ninja Crysis Zealots which seem to inhabit this forum sometimes, and disembowl anyone with any signs of naysaying it'll be the second coming of christ or something ;) :p

As with all games, it will depend who you ask.
For me and many others, Half Life 2 deserved all the awards and praise that it got and still does. It is still the best game i have ever played and far and away the best FPS. It didn't have the impact on me that the original did (which i think for it's time, was a better game in comparison, though not better if comparing them today. if that makes sense?).
It looks like it will be the highest rated game of all time though at this rate. Will be interesting to see what Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 do in reviews as well as CoD4 and Crysis.
Certainly a very interesting autumn/winter.

Is anyone likely to be selling this game for less than 40 pounds?
With quidco 10% discount (I think, at least 5% though) then yes. It's worth keeping an eye out on the regular deals websites though for discount codes.

I just pre-ordered it for £34.99 with a £5 off discount code from a popular high street store site.

Aye it's definately perspective based, I mean I thought half life 2 was really good, dont get me wrong, but I really didnt think it deserved all the best game ever stuff it got, it was good, but not like a whole new world, and after a while of hearing thats what it was, you start to become a little disillusioned with it hehe Im REALLY looking forward to Metroid and Super Smash Bros tho, I mean Im replaying MP2 so Im ready for MP3, and some of its really hard (stuck on the boost guardian and spider guardian for quite some time), great game tho, and some of the graphics are really good when you consider they're now 3+ years old, and were designed with old hardware in mind.

Metroid Prime 3 should really benefit from having 2-3 times the graphical grunt of the gamecube available, as you could always feel Metroid and Retro studios wanted to go that little further than it could, but was held back by hardware constraints. Metroid on future machines in HD could be something special graphically :)

I think the closing paragraph of the Eurogamer review sums it up really well.

And with that out of the way, all that remains is to insist that anyone with a PC or a 360 goes out and buys this wonderful game on the 24th of August (or sooner if you happen to live near the street date-breaking US retailers), and send a message to the entire games industry that this is the kind of game that people want. BioShock is the ultimate rarity: not only does it live up to its lofty promise, but exceeds it through simple, old fashioned talent and imagination - not to mention verve, style, class, wit, and sheer bloody-minded ambition. It takes the tired, worn-out FPS genre by the scruff of the neck, reinvents and bend it out of shape in such a breathtaking fashion that it's going to take something very special to top this in the months and years ahead. For a game to be so outstanding in one department is one thing - to manage to tick every single box from graphics to audio to gameplay depth to atmosphere and innovation is pretty much unprecedented. Seriously - if you don't find something to love about BioShock, we'd recommend a trip to the nearest doctor to check if your heart's still beating.
