My own little bubble :)
I've googled and there are lots of big words to explain what it is/how it affects people, but i just wondered if anyone had experienced it (not necessarily in a personal way) or know much about it?

thanks

My highs are manic. My lows are suicidal. Some people can have manic episodes that last days, weeks, months or even years. But there's always a crash and when people crash they crash hard.

Thanks, I understand what your saying, but if the person it affects doesnt know or want to know about it how can you stop them from 'crashing' so hard?

.. in the olden days you were either happy or unhappy and you just got on with it. But now it's a 'condition'. I'm sure it's a way to get grants/handouts of the Govt. People need to get a grip with all these latter day made up 'illnesses'

I don't know about that chap, my Gramps was given electric shock therapy for depression.

Well according to wiki it can trace its classification to the 1850s so....yeah. Bipolar isn't about being sad or happy, its about the rapid change and contrast between the two. I seem to recall Steven Fry when he disappeared off to Europe somewhere was a bipolar episode.

A friend of mine suffers from it, his highs manifest themselves as spending sprees, uncontrollable spending on impulse items that he cannot afford and would never normally buy. The lows are normally just anger and tiredness and a lack of drive to do anything.

If you'd ever seen some one with 'real' mania you would think twice about that. I know what you mean about people saying they have these things when there is nothing wrong with them. People say they have OCD a lot these days, but knowing people that really have it you know they don't.

Family friend suffers from this linked to alcholism. In the good times, no issues and doesn't drink, when this goes down hill it all goes wrong and the episodes can last months and can't be treated where the drinking starts again. Vicious circle, very sad.

See a doctor and ask them for their advice. I've only ever been a patient. So from the point of view of a patient it's got to be something they want to do and sometimes extreme lifestyle changes are in order to manage their condition. It's something they will probably have to deal with for the rest of their lives. I know I will.

Bipolar disorder is neither a made up disorder or a latter day illness. Its old name was Manic Depression. Obviously the word Manic has a stigma attached to it, so the disorder was renamed, probably to represent the polar opposites that people can experience.

It affects rather more people than you realise including the following....

Sophie Anderton
Adam Ant
Russell Brand
Jeremy Brett
Frank Bruno
Alistair Campbell
Ray Davies
Richard Dreyfuss
Carrie Fisher
Stephen Fry
Paul Gascoigne
Mel Gibson
Macey Grey
Graham Greene
Linda Hamilton
Ernest Hemmingway
Jack Irons
Kerry Katona
Spike Milligan
Ben Moody
Sinead O'Connor
Bill Oddie
Ozzy Osbourne
Emma Parker Bowles
Gail Porter
Axl Rose
Jean-Claud Van Damme
Ruby Wax
Brian Wilson
Catheryn Zeta Jones

..so it looks like your more susceptible if your an alcoholic or take drugs. And the side effect of taking drugs is

Have had close experiences with it, close family members who suffer from this illness. It's no fake benifit claim condition, but can be a truly horrifying thing to witness.

Or possibly more susceptible to take drink or drugs if you're bipolar, perhaps

(Of course, I'm sure there's just as big a list, if not bigger, of famous people that aren't bipolar and yet are infamous for drink/drugs)

Stephen Fry suffers from it, he made a documentary a while back. Have a look at video sites as you may be able to find it

Oh really? Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it...!

I suppose you see/hear about it on tv and in the media, but until your see it for yourself, I suppose you dont truly understand

Also I agree with the drink issue that has been raised, its like a whole new person!
