Birds of Steel

That looks good. I'm only interested in the arcade mode as I'm not a sim nut but it looks like it should have good legs for multiple plays.

looks quite good.

It mentions theres a story mode where you do missions in ww2 pacific...hrm ok

so is this just a series of missions or a career mode? ie promotions, commanding own squadron, medals etc?

I have been looking for a nice plane game. Never seem to get jets in BF3. i have Blazing angels and that was a bit of a let down. i guess ill give this a look.

The Demo is available on Xbox live - I have to say I'm really impressed with it. Initially I was underwhelmed with the graphics of the aircraft sitting on the runway, but once you are in the air and getting used to the flight controls (which work suprisingly well on the Xbox controller) the scenery and overall look is fantastic, the shadows and little details like scratches in the canopy perspex in the sunlight are really nicely done.

It feels less arcade and a lot closer to the PC version than the previous game, definate purchase for me.

I agree. Sure, this isn't a full fat flight simulator but it's probably the best you can do on a console. I'm really impressed that the developers have put in the option to rebind all buttons/axis and even define your own buttons (mixture, brakes etc). The game also looks and runs very smooth with lots of nice little graphical details.

It's just a shame I suck at the actual combat part! :p

Not too bothered about graphics tbh but.....

I remember way back on the C64 playing F19 Stealth Stealth Fighter. You could get promoted through the ranks and even earn the Congressional Medal of Honor among other medals(depending on how well your mission went - first medal was usually silver star)

Is this game any good?

If you enjoyed the IL2 PC flight simulator series, and want a similar experience on a console, then yes, most definately. I think its fantastic - I just spent an hour doing takeoffs, acrobatics and landings in an Me109 and it is as good a 'sim' experience as I've ever had on the PC - only now I have the convenience of experiencing it on my sofa and my big TV :)

The sheer amount of flyable aircraft with detailed cockpits, maps, dynamic and historical campaigns along with single mission editor and free light options are huge for a console flight sim, and the multiplayer is great fun too.

If flight sims are not your thing, then no.
