I am up in Birmingham with a couple of friends over the weekend and wondered could anyone recommend any decent nightclubs, bars?

Also i am conscious of the dress code? Are most places shirt only or will a polo-shirt with jeans and shoes be fine!

I have a hotel right in the city centre so most things are accessible.

Depends on your music choice/ what kind of places you enjoy

The boy's i am with are into more Dance type music not my sort of thing but i will be the odd one out if i say metal!

dress code - will a smart polo work or are they really strict?

My local city Cardiff will allow ANYTHING! even trainers. So need some advice.

Start off with cheap drinks at Lloyds bar on Broad st then work your way up, Walkabout, Risa, Flares etc.

If you want more places to dance then head to China Town.

If you want abit of class and have fat pockets, head to the Mailbox, the bars on Summer Row or the Jewellery Quarter.

Never seen places been too fussy about dress code, smart polo/shirt jeans thing would be more than enough for your average club.

Broad street is the usual suggestion for nights out as there are a wide range of the usual club and bars which should suit your tastes somewhere.

There are rock clubs in Birmingham but as you can probably expect they tend to be up back streets in some dodgy looking places haha :p

Cheers guys, looking like i might get dragged into Gatecrasher. The dress code is fairly relaxed by the looks of things.

The hotel im staying at is now the worrying thing looks a complete dive! 3 boys sharing a room with the sink in the main bedroom LOL - Etap Centre hotel! :(

Used to frequent XL's (rock night) & the Academy, also odd night at gatecrasher back some years back - gatecrasher used to have an indie night (but can't recall if they still do, preferable to chav dance music)

O2 Academy has a decent mix of music, but not that much dance.

Academy isnt there anymore, its something different now but cant remember what exactly and Subculture is only on once a month. XL's shut down YEARS a go. There is Subside thats fairly decent if you want a rock bar and its open pretty late IIRC.

Theres snobs right by Subside as well for more Indie stuff

Bunch of lads / Gatecrasher?
Broad Street is your best option. Beware you'll get ripped off by practically every pub you go into (they all charge once it hits a certain hour).
To be honest I'd much rather head to Brindley Place / Arcadian / Digbeth area as others have mentioned. Broad Street is the place where they constantly film Emergency Bikers due to people passed out in the street by 10.30pm. Mailbox is cool, it's about £4 a pint though.

I've never understood why people recomend/actually go to Broad Street in Brum it is a horrible dive full of crappy chain pubs and drunken idiots. I'd basically say go anywhere but there.
